Renon

From The Codex
"Mature Content"
This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.

Pray excuse me, but have you seen a scroll hereabouts? Ah that’s it! I thank you dearly! This is important to my business. Forgive my rudeness. My name is Renon. I am what you would call a demon. Wait wait! I am not an enemy! My role is to provide useful items for adventurers to the dark castle. It is shameful for a demon to be working, but one needs gold even in Hell these days. Surely we were fated to meet! Whenever the need arises, use the scroll to summon me. Dear me, is that the time? We have talked too long. Remember, summon me whenever you need.
~ Renon to Cornell, Reinhardt Schneider, or Carrie Fernandez

I have been waiting for this. At last we reach the climax. I have come to take my leave. News has arrived of an impending global war. The death of millions is a wonderful business opportunity. I must be gone. We shall not meet again…not during your lifetime anyway…
~ Renon to Cornell, Reinhardt Schneider, or Carrie Fernandez

I have been waiting for this. At last we reach the climax. I have come to take my leave. But first there is a small thing I require from you. That scroll you have used so often…did you read what it says? It’s written in ancient demon script. Impossible to read. What is written is thus…You have agreed to a contract with Satan. Borrow over 30 thousand gold pieces, and your soul is forfeit. You have taken far more than this amount. I now enforce the contract. Your soul is mine!!!
~ Renon to Cornell, Reinhardt Schneider, or Carrie Fernandez

Background

Renon is a non-playable character featured in Castlevania (N64) and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness. A demon merchant, Renon offers various useful items to players during their journey in exchange for gold. However, there is a hidden danger in overindulging in his services. Those who grow too reliant on his wares may face dire consequences.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Renon’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Renon, a suave and enterprising demon, brought an unconventional flair to the 1844 resurgence of Castlevania. Over the years, individuals from all walks of life have ventured into Dracula's domain, driven by various motives—rescue missions, revenge, or mere survival. Regardless of their purpose, these intrepid adventurers required supplies to endure the perils of the castle. While some scavenged sustenance like Roast Beef hidden in crumbling walls, Renon identified an untapped opportunity to capitalize on their needs.

With entrepreneurial foresight, Renon scattered contracts across the castle and its surrounding grounds. Those who stumbled upon these scrolls could summon him instantly, where he would appear impeccably prepared with a briefcase of goods for sale. Renon justified his mercantile pursuits with the pragmatic declaration that "it is shameful for a demon to be working, but one needs gold even in Hell these days." This statement underscored his willingness to forgo the demon’s traditional allegiance to sloth, one of the Seven Deadly Sins, in favor of earning his keep in the ever-demanding economy of the underworld.

If Cornell, Reinhardt Schneider, or Carrie Fernandez spends 30,000 gold or more on items through Renon, he will confront them in one of the staircase rooms leading to the Castle Keep before their final encounter with Dracula. Renon politely inquires whether they took the time to read the terms of the contract written on the summoning scroll. As it was written in ancient demon script, he explains the clause they likely missed: by borrowing over 30,000 gold pieces, the contract binds their soul to him. Since they exceeded the limit, Renon appears to claim what is now rightfully his—their soul.

Revealing his true form, Renon transforms into a fearsome demon with a goat-like head, bat-like wings, and a muscular torso clad in armor. Wielding a massive spear, he becomes an unexpected adversary that Cornell, Reinhardt, or Carrie must now battle.

If Cornell, Reinhardt Schneider, or Carrie Fernandez has not spent 30,000 gold by this point, Renon still appears briefly in one of the staircase rooms leading to the Castle Keep. However, rather than confronting them, he politely informs them that he must take his leave to attend to more pressing matters elsewhere. Before departing, he cryptically mentions that within the next century, a great war will occur, one that will claim millions of souls, suggesting his services will be in high demand during that time.

Golem with his ultimate can shoot out a mouth blast that vaporizes everything it touches as far as the eye can see getting these results[9]. Powers and Techniques

Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[27], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[28]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[29]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[30]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[31]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[32]. With their souls being completely free from time[33]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[34]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[35]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[36], becoming stronger when it's night time[37]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[38] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[39]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[40]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[41]), Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos[42], where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[43], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[44]), Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[45]), Time Manipulation (Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[46]), Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[47]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[48], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[49]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[50]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[51]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[52], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[53], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[54], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[55]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[56]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[57], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[58]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[59]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[60]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[61]).

Resistance to Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[62]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[63]), Time Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[64], with their souls being completely free from time[65]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[66], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[67]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss-level creatures[68]), Fate Manipulation (All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[69], with their souls being completely free from time[70], with fate being a truth wound by time[71])

Magic & Principle Manipulation (Through utilizing magic, one has to have a deep understanding of Quantum Physics to utilize it to its fullest, requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[72]. Magic comes from alchemy, a field that experiments with the principles of God's creation of the world[73], along with being said to be as great a task as recreating God's creation of the Earth[74]), Non-Standard Interaction (Extra-Planar Interaction; Magic is able to interact with beings such as Camilla Fernandez[75], Physical attacks are difficult to land as Camilla lives in the Astral plane, and her earthly body is completely ethereal[76]), Limited Immersion & Dimensional Travel (Magic users can align their magic with the magic of another to enter into painting worlds[77]), Summoning (Magic can be used in order to summon weapons and items inscribed in grimoires[78])
Weapon Mastery (Spear Mastery; Uses a spear in combat to lunge at his opponent with[79]), Flight (In his true demon form he has wings allowing him to fly naturally[80]), Transformation (Transformative Arsenal; His human form is a mere guise and he transforms into his true demon form when taking one's soul[81]), Battlefield Removal (Forced Teleportation; Sends his opponent to a random pocket dimension to fight him in[82]), Curtain Fire (Multi-Directional; Can send out multiple fireballs at once in multiple directions[83]) & Fire Manipulation (Can shoot out fireballs to attack his opponent with[84]), Summoning & Glyph Manipulation (Creates a glyph that causes a demonic flying fish to be summoned out of it[85]).

Resistance to Dracula's Castle (Renon provides useful items for adventurers in Draculs' Castle without facing any adverse effects from the Castle itself[86]) The Castle Abilities Include:

Reality Warping (The Castle does not work on standard logic, where changing rooms can have one view a completely different background[87], such as room with a blue sky that is reflecting up and downwards and having the cloud srotate at a fast speed[88]), Transmutation (Beings that come near are subject to the castle's influence, such as a local barnyard owl which was mutated just from flying near it[89]), Possession (The castle possesses objects with its magic, such as a ouija table[90]), Sealing (Dracula's magic captured Aguni, a primitive god of fire[91]. The Castle has doors sealed off without solving puzzles[92]. This can extend to walls being sealed off where explosions will not affect it until the seal is gone[93]), Mind Manipulation (Everything that enters the castle is under the control by the power of Dracula's castle[94], the ghost of Eric Lecarde needed to cast a magic barrier to bind himself so he could be free from the control of the castle[95]. The Castle corrupts the minds of those who enter it, such as making Maxim Kischine feel strange ever since coming to it[96]. It also corrupted the mind of Hugh turning him against Nathan with Nathan noting he's being controlled by Dracula[97]. The castle increases one's dark desires, allowing Dracula to easily control them[98]. The magic of Dracula's power that empowers the owl enemy also spurs it to violence[99]), Madness Manipulation (The Castle warped Gergoth, a once-gentle beast and drove it mad[100]), Size Manipulation (Magically enlarged a toad through the use of demonic baptism[101]), Fear Manipulation (Even while far away, Curtis and Michelle felt malicious intent from the castle where their bodies seemed to squeal "run away"[102]. Michelle even being at the entrance to the castle had her body telling her to not go in and her leg muscles being petrified like stone[103]), Curse Manipulation (The Curse status that spirits inflict[104] comes from them absorbing the magic power around the castle. The Castle cursed a human to turn into a lizard man[105]), Life Manipulation (The castle can bring inanimate statues to life to attack[106]. Can cause the glass murals to come to life and attack[107]), Soul Manipulation (Those that die in the castle become one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle for eternity[108]), Abstract Manipulation & Hell Manipulation (The castle can create a core of evil made from hatred, envy, anger and other dark emotions[109]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[110], where is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[111] where creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[112], along with their vital souls causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[113], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[114], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[115], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[116]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[117]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[118], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[119]. Death was going to use Dracula's magic to rewrite Dracula's defeat to Trevor making it where Dracula defeats Trevor Belmont instead where Dracula would go on living in the rewritten grimoire with each grimoire being its own world and the grimoires influence extends into reality[120]), Law Manipulation (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[121], which alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[122]), Power Modification (The vital souls are noted to be apart of the Castle's power[123], which the vital souls cause alterations of the Grimoire that can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[124]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[125])

Equipment

Spear

A spear Renon has with him in his true demon form, he uses it for lunging attacks. It is likely the the Chauve-souris (the spear Isaac uses) as they look very similar.

Notable Techniques

  • Dark Energy Fireballs: Renon spawns multiple dark energy fireballs that initially hover slowly before homing in rapidly toward the player.
  • Spear Lunge: Renon flies into the distance and then charges forward at high speed, hurling his spear. The spear spins through the air before returning to his hand.
  • Summon Demonic Fishes: Renon flies high above and conjures a spell, creating several portals on the floor that summon demonic fishes to attack the player. During this time, he also unleashes a rapid barrage of fireballs.

Other

Standard Tactics

  • Renon primarily attacks by flying out of range of the hero's weapons and summoning dark energy fireballs. These projectiles initially move slowly in place before homing in on the player at high speed.
  • Later in the battle, he retreats into the distance and lunges forward at high velocity, swinging his spear and throwing it. The spear spins through the air before returning to his hands after a short delay.
  • Another attack is initiated similarly, with Renon retreating and lunging forward. This time, he ascends high into the air and begins casting a spell by waving his spear. This summons portals on the ground, from which demonic fish emerge to attack the player, while Renon simultaneously unleashes a rapid barrage of fireballs.

Weaknesses

Note

Trivia

  • The spear Renon brandishes in his demon form seems to be the Chauve-souris, which is also known for having evil origins. The similarity can be more clearly seen in an existing artwork of him in demon form.
  • Renon's boss fight is almost identical in structure to Death's, only with fireballs instead of scythes.
  • Renon bears a physical resemblance and a similar name to actor Jean Reno. His face seems to be modeled after the actor, who was notably popular in the 1990s.

That really is no doubt an obsession.
The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.
    “Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
    However-----
    Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul."
