Granting my beloved's wish. That is all I can do to prove my love to Sara. Eternity without her would be nothing but emptiness.
~ Leon to Mathias Cronqvist
I see. Give him this message: You have become a cursed being and I will never forgive you. This whip and my kinsmen will destroy you someday. From this day on, the Belmont Clan will hunt the night.
~ Leon's message to Mathias Cronqvist

Background

Leon Belmont is a protagonist of the Castlevania series, specifically the main protagonist of Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. He is the first known member of the Belmont Clan, and the one to solidify the family as a Clan of Vampire Hunters. Once good friends of Mathias Cronqvist, Leon was secretly goaded by him into a castle in the woods in search of his beloved, Sara Trantoul. The secrets of the castle, and Mathias's plan, unfolded as soon as he arrived.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Leon’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Born in Europe, 1072, Leon Belmont grew up in a time where legendary knights fought against heretics in the name of God. At a very young age, Leon was orphaned, and then was knighted at 16 years old. Leon eventually proved his swordsmanship skills by joining a company of knights; a company of which was viewed as being nearly invincible. Within that platoon was Leon's brother-in-arms and very close friend, Mathias Cronqvist. However, Mathias soon left the company of knights and was bedridden, after the death of his wife.

Nearly a year later, Mathias came to Leon bringing news that Leon's betrothed, Sara Trantoul, had been kidnapped by a powerful vampire, and was taken to a castle in the Eternal Night forest. Distraught, Leon gave up his sword to the church and renounced his position, before travelling into the forest. There, the Belmont found a man named Rinaldo Gandolfi; an old alchemist who lived alone in the woods. Walter gave Leon plenty of advice and entrusted him with the Whip of Alchemy.

After fighting his way through the castle and making his way to Walter, however, he discovered that the whip did not hurt the vampire whatsoever. Furthermore, when he finally saw Sara, she appeared to be completely unresponsive. Leon took Sara and left Walter's castle, bringing her back to Rinaldo. Unfortunately, all Leon discovered was that Walter had turned Sara into a vampire, and that it wouldn't be long before she gave into her instincts.

Seeing no other option but ending her life, Rinaldo devised a plan. Through fusing Sara's vampiric soul with the Whip of Alchemy, he could create a much more powerful spell that would be able to harm vampires such as Walter. Agreeing to do so, Leon bound Sara's soul to the whip, transforming it into the deadly Vampire Killer. With his new whip in hand, Leon ventured back into Walter's castle, and was successful in striking him down.

At the last moment, during Walter's defeat, his soul was extracted and given to Mathias, who stepped out of the shadows and revealed himself to Leon as the puppet master behind everything. Leon, completely refusing to believe that his friend would abandon humanity in order to become a vampire, watched as Mathias summoned his servant, Death, and vanished into the night. Infuriated, Leon swore that the Belmont Clan would hunt down Mathias forevermore, and devote their days to defeating monsters of the night.

After winning his battle against Death, Leon escaped Walter's crumbling castle and left the Eternal Knight forest. From there, he went on to establish the Belmont Clan of vampire killers, and would search for Mathias until his dying days. Eventually, Leon's descendant, Trevor Belmont, would finally track down Mathias (now known as Count Dracula,) and slay him for the first time.

During and before Trevor's time[73], the Belmont's were feared because of their immense power[74]), Acrobatics (Due to Belmonts superhuman nature, they possess very athletic and acrobatic bodies, examples include Richter easily flipping over Death's scythe attack while also jumping around and fighting Death while on a moving horse carriage[75]. Richter also showcases this with his boss fight in Dracula X where he must jump across platforms while also fighting against Dracula[76]. Julius showcasing extreme acrobatic leaps to reach the top of a castle drawbridge[77]), Genius Intelligence (Belmonts are trained and some of the best users of various sub-weapons, which in Castlevania requires one to have a high intelligence to be able to do[78]), Martial Arts (Trevor left behind all of his fighting techniques to each new Belmont clan member and Morris clan member[79]), Weapon Mastery (No matter the Belmont, they have all showcase a natural gift in using weapons, with Christopher showcasing the tools of his family's destiny are always the axe, dagger, cross, & stop watch[80]. Many of the famous Belmont weapons were left behind by Trevor[81], with him noting them to be the axe, dagger, cross, holy water, and stop watch[82]), Sheer Will (The Belmonts are all ones with strong courage and willpower, where having a strong constitution dictates and influences how fast one can recover from status effects such as poison or curse[83]. Belmonts are pillars of strength, willing to keep fighting even when weakened greatly and having their existence slowly erased from history[84]. Simon claims that the Belmonts and Morrises did not defeat Dracula because of the Vampire Killer, with the reason behind heroes' capacity to fight against evil lying not in their physical strength but the noble desire to drive away evil and usher in all that is good, the desire to protect the world for all of humanity, with the courage to fight to protect others being the true essence of a hero and a Belmont's strength, with this even applying for other heroes such as Shanoa, Maria, Charlotte, and even Arikado[85]. The Belmonts will should be greater than even the likes of the Fernandez/Belnades Clan, including Camilla Fernandez, where its noted she had great spirit and struggled mightily against the curse before she became a vampire[86]), Aura (Belmonts release a glow of aura around them[87], that envelops their body[88]), Non-Standard Interaction (Metaphysical Interaction; Belmonts can interact with ghosts with their whips and sub-weapons[89]. Abstract Interaction; Belmonts can interact with and kill Death[95], where Death is death, being the absolute presence, the awe, the religion, and the dark god[96]. He refers to death itself as him[97]. Noting that he is completely death and human death is only a part of Chaos[98]. Olrox when seeing Death fight serious notes that he senses the overwhelming existence of death and states that death really exists[99]), Nullification (Pain Immunity Nullification; The Belmonts can make the White Dragon visibly react to pain[100] and scream out in pain, where it is an immortal being immune to pain and suffering[101]. Abstract Nullification; The Belmonts can nullify and destroy the scythes from Death, who can use his scythes to kill abstractions such as distance and sound[102]. Death decides who lives and who dies[103]), Immortality Negation (Ageless & Life and Death Immunity; The Belmonts can render immortal skeleton death gods like Death, mortal, having him bleed from attacks, giving him mortality as shown when Death dies to his own scythe cutting off his head and having blood spurt out, something not possible as a skeleton[104]. The Belmonts can kill Death to the point that he requires Mathias to survive in order for him to rise from the dead[105]. Death is a being unconstrained by mortality[106]), Resurrection Bypassing (The Belmonts can kill zombies[107], who are corpses brought back to life from the power of hate[108]), Enhanced Senses (Belmonts such as Trevor could sense the power of a Belmont within Simon and also could tell he did not seem to grasp the fundamentals of combat in Judgment's time rift[109]), Extrasensory Perception (Belmonts can feel others being in an area, such as Simon Belmont being able to feel Trevor Belmont is in the time rift[110]. Belmonts such as Julius naturally have magical powers due to this[125], along with Juste having magical powers deriving from the Fernandez (Belnades) family[126]), Principle Manipulation (Magic comes from alchemy, a field that experiments with the principles of God's creation of the world[127]), Afterimage Creation (Belmonts can envelop themselves in an aura of light that allows them to move so fast, their light projections cannot keep up[128]), Glyph Creation & Portal Creation (The Belmont blood acts as a key to[129] the infinite corridor[130]), Empowerment & Holy Manipulation (Belmonts can amplify weapons, Leon holding The Whip of Alchemy had it become more powerful then before, with Rinaldo stating that the whip fits Leon better then it fits him, despite him being the one to make the Whip of Alchemy[131]. Medusa even noted that it wasn't so powerful before believing the whip gained its complete form[132]. Belmonts can call upon the power of the light and use it to amplify their strength to be stronger and faster[133], this is also shown with Trevor Belmont's ultimate in Castlevania Judgment[134]. The Belmonts can use their stored energy (hearts) and transfer it into subweapons to make regular weapons as strong as they are along with magically enhancing them[135]), Invulnerability (Belmonts have an inborn self-defense ability known as "Burning Mode" which makes them invincible and raises their status to twice the normal level[136]), Statistics Boost (Belmonts get stronger from hearing of someone's grief, wanting to help them[137]), Reactive Power Level (As Dracula grows stronger each time he revives, the Belmonts have had to keep up, evolving to be powerful even without the strength of the Vampire Killer[138]), Sealing (Metaphysical Sealing; Belmonts can capture the spirits of enemies equal or greater to an area boss and use their abilities from their soul[139]), Nullification (Sealing Nullification; Belmonts such as Julius can completely destroy barriers, however depending on how strong the barrier is, they may have no more energy to fight[140])

Resistances to Extreme Colds (Belmonts can walk in ice cold rooms without much worry[141]), Extreme Heats (Belmonts can travel in boiling hot rooms without much effect[142]. They can also fight enemies such as the Flame Elemental who emerges from the lavas of the room with the whole room being so hot it's colored red[143]. Richter showcases this where he moves around in a burning city without much effect or limitation to his movements[144]), Absorption (Belmonts can fight and take hits from the mist[145], a creature that swallows up the living[146]), Life-Force Absorption (Belmonts can take hits from the Spirit[147], which is an evil spirit that sucks up people's life energy[148]), Corruption (Belmonts can be bitten by vampires without instantly turning[149]), Helfire Attacks (Belmonts can take hits from the Flame Demon, a demon that wields the fires of Hell[150]), Status Effect Inducement, Poison Manipulation, & Curse Manipulation (The Belmonts are all ones with strong courage and willpower, where having a strong constitution dictates and influences how fast one can recover from status effects such as poison or curse[151]), Paralysis Inducement (Belmonts can be paralyzed[152], and slowly recover from the effects of it[153]), Attack Reflection (Belmonts can[154] hit Dracula[155] with different[156] projectile[157] attacks[158], this extends to even Morrises'[159], where Dracula's mere rib bone reflects all projectiles back[160]), Petrification (Belmonts can[161] take hits[162], from Medusa heads[163] who can turn one into stone upon contacting them[164]. Belmonts can[165] can break out of[166], being petrified[167]), Erasure (Metaphysical Erasure; The blood of the Belmont Clan can keep one's spirit from being erased from Dracula's magic[168]), Time Stop (Belmonts are unaffected by time being stopped[169]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[170], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[171]), Poison Manipulation (Belmonts can take hits from the poison zombie[172], which spews a deadly poison that can rot flesh on contact[173]), Fear Manipulation (Belmonts can be within Dracula's presence along with holding and using Dracula's rib bone where Dracula's mere rib bone is enough to make[174] an ordinary hero feel like a spineless coward[175]), Light Manipulation & Holy Manipulation (Belmonts have a natural resistance to holy elemental attacks[176]), Absolute Zero (Belmonts can take ice from the frost demon[177], a demon that wields absolute cold[178] and a total command of cold[179], making it superior to the likes of Cyril who can wield absolute zero and is seen as a standard ability from a creature of the night[180]), Essence Manipulation (Belmonts can take hits from Succubus[181], who can suck up a person's essence[182]), Sleep Manipulation (Belmonts are able to resist sleep based abilities, such as Leon resisting Walter's attempt to put him to sleep[183]), Death Manipulation & Fate Manipulation (Belmonts cannot[184] be killed[185] by the[186] likes of[187] Death and his scythes[188], who is noted to govern the fate of death[189], being noted to have the power to govern the end of all living things[190], and can use his scythes to kill abstractions such as distance and sound[191]. Death decides who lives and who dies[192]), Law Manipulation (Belmonts are unaffected by contracts, where Renon had Reinhardt unknowingly agree to a contract with Satan where if he spends over 30 thousand gold pieces, his soul is forfeit, with Reinhardt being able to kill Renon and negate the contract altogether[193], where contracts are made to be absolute and bind one to it's agreements[194])

“What have you misunderstood? I am Death. Human death only comprises a part of chaos. They can come back again as zombies or skeletons, but without a soul, dead bodies cannot be revived. And ----- there is no reason to perform that.”
  99. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Those scythes constructed by magic did not turn towards Olrox or Michelle, every scythe then gathered near the youth’s body.
Then, those numerous blades made from magic overlapped with each other and with a powerful atrocious magic constructed a Death scythe in Death’s arm.
“This false castle……You shall fall into chaos as a thing that denies the existence of the [lord]……[death] shall pass judgment on your sins!”
Sensing the overwhelming existence of [death], Olrox again realized that the youth in front of him is [Death]------laughed out loud.
“interesting…… So, death really exists! Thus I’ll use all my power…… to shatter that thing called [death].”

That really is no doubt an obsession.
The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.
    “Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
    However-----
    Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul."

It was a whip that was soaked in blood in some places.
“I picked this up at the garden and I believe this is yours, right? Old man Julius also uses a whip. I came here just to deliver this to ya.”
Whoosh, receiving the thrown whip, Michelle noticed that it was the magical whip that serves as Curtis’ weapon.
“That’s great……! Curtis! With this your power-----“
In order to shake away the confusion she had a while ago, Michelle raised her voice, but-----
“Sorry, but…… with my current self, I could not handle it.”
“……? What are you talking about? Curtis……”
was he still confused, Michelle made him grip his whip.
Snap, some kind of popping sound rang and Michelle felt a light shock in her arm.
    “Uh……!?”
What happened, she directed her eyes on the origin of the shock-----
A part of the whip’s handle had a rotten like disintegration-----
A part of Curtis’ hand was burned, and that skin immediately returned back to as before.
    ----- No way……
    “Curtis……?”
“……I am currently weak at holy magic.”
