"Mature Content"
This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.

Justice! I'll take you to the grave with me!
We were forged by the will of greedy human beings. And so, we're nothing more than a symbol of all that's wrong with the world. For that reason... I will never stop until I've destroyed every Gear.

No! YOU'RE being selfish! No! I refuse! My world is the one where you exist! I won't let ANYBODY take that away from me! I'll fight for my world until I'm dead! I'm not giving up, and I'm sure as hell not listening to you!
~ Fredrick to Aria
Me? What the hell do I know. All I'm trying to hit is one of those memories you seem to have forgotten. Heh. You really know how to get on my nerves, don't you? Nobody tells me something's impossible. When I tried to go into the Backyard after Justice, you stopped me. Now, I figure that was part of your plan. But the reason you gave me...something about how people shouldn't be alone. If that's not a lie... PROVE IT TO ME!
~ Sol to Elphelt
You ready to get pounded?

You like fireworks? I make it a habit to be alone. Always have... That's the path I've chosen. The world I've started to like. Then all of a sudden a whole bunch of people start to butt into my peaceful life with ideas of their own. I'm in love with this, I want to protect that, I want to rise up, I want to reclaim those, I want to redo everything... You can see how that'll get on a man's nerves. It's like watching fireworks. But you know, that's helped me realize something... That I'm not just "one," I'm "one of many." My world existed in a box of freedom that was handed to me. So, you try and change the world according to your plans, but in doing so you affect and are affected by others... How's that any different from what you're trying to do!? This world's like one huge-ass firework. How the hell can I miss it?
~ Sol to Universal Will on being alone in the world

Rumors of an immensely skilled lone-wolf bounty hunter had reached the ears of Kliff Undersn, the retiring captain of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights. Kliff was interested; he spared no means in finding Sol, and invited him to become a member of the Order. Sol's knighthood, however, was not to last. The growing tension between he and young master swordsman Ky Kiske was becoming more and more bothersome, and Sol realized that the majority of the knights bore him little more than ill will. When he saw his opportunity, he took it; Sol managed to desert the knights' camp with one of the Order's most valuable treasures... the blade known as Fireseal. It is now five years later after the end of the Crusades, and Sol has returned to his former ways. On a particularly lucrative bounty run, one of his marks begs to be spared, telling Sol about a faraway tournament being organized by the Sacred Order. Sol barely even registers the quick thrust with which he ends his bounty's life... as his thoughts are now far away, centered on only one goal...

Sol Badguy is an aggressive striker who beats the the opponent down with style. He is a blunt and short-tempered man. He only speaks when required and uses as few words as he can get away with. He's not very good at explaining things, so he prefers to express himself with his aggressive behavior and attitude. While most see him as selfish and violent, those closest to him accept him for who he is.

~ Sol Badguy's Official Website Description

Background

Sol Badguy serves as the main protagonist of the Guilty Gear series and acts as Ky Kiske’s long-standing rival. A skilled yet brash and distant bounty hunter, he dedicates his life to tracking down and destroying all Gears, as well as their creator, That Man. During the Crusades, Sol briefly served as a member of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights under the alias "Order-Sol."

An alternate version of him, known as his Awakened form, appears exclusively as an unlockable boss character in Guilty Gear Isuka.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Sol Badguy's story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Initial
In the 20th century, Sol Badguy was born as Frederick Bulsara (フレデリック=バルサラ, Furederikku Barusara), a scientist specializing in Magic Physics. During his college years, he met Aria Hale, with whom he formed a close romantic relationship, and That Man, who became one of his dearest friends. After graduation, the trio joined the Gear Project, founded by their mentor Vince MacDonell, with the goal of advancing humanity through scientific innovation. At one point, Frederick proposed to Aria, and though she accepted, she was aware of her deteriorating health. As a memento, she gave Frederick her hat, which he kept.

That Man Story
In 2015, the team succeeded in stabilizing Gear cells infused with magic, prompting That Man to hand over their findings to the government. In 2016, Frederick learned that Aria was terminally ill and pleaded for her to enter cryosleep until a cure could be found. While Aria initially refused, she ultimately agreed, unaware of That Man’s true plan. That Man infused Frederick with the Flame of Corruption, turning him into a Gear and faking his death. Upon awakening amidst chaos, Frederick confronted That Man, who denied their friendship and fled with Aria’s capsule.

Determined to take revenge, Frederick escaped the facility and crafted a special headband to suppress his Gear cells. By around 2030, he became a bounty hunter known for destroying criminal groups in his search for That Man. His growing reputation in the underworld earned him the nickname “Badguy.” When the government resumed the Gear Project, he vowed to destroy every Gear in existence. During this time, he met Slayer, who, moved by Frederick’s fiery determination, gave him the name “Sol.” From then on, he adopted the full name “Sol Badguy.”

In 2073, upon learning of Justice’s creation, Sol forged a powerful weapon known as the Outrage. Realizing its immense power was uncontrollable, he divided it into eight Sacred Treasures, which later came into the possession of the United Nations and the Sacred Order of Holy Knights. When the Crusades began in 2074, Sol continued his private war against the Gears. In 2103, he rescued a young Kliff Undersn from a Gear attack, earning his respect.

Order-Sol
In 2172, Kliff located and recruited Sol to join the Sacred Order of Holy Knights, placing him under Ky Kiske’s command. However, Sol’s rebellious attitude and Ky’s restraint during their first duel created tension between them. The rivalry escalated when Ky caught Sol attempting to steal the Fireseal; Sol defeated Ky and deserted the Order soon after. Kliff, recognizing Sol’s potential, entrusted him with the Sacred Treasure regardless, leaving Ky determined to one day settle the score.

In 2175, Sol faced Justice again in battle after Kliff and Ky forced her to retreat. Justice attempted to control Sol upon realizing he was a Gear, but he resisted her influence and unleashed his flames, defeating her. Ky then found Justice in a weakened state and ordered her sealing, effectively ending the war. Sol quietly disappeared afterward, returning to his life as a bounty hunter.

Guilty Gear
By 2180, Sol took an interest in the Second Holy Order Selection Tournament after hearing rumors surrounding its purpose. Winning the tournament, he discovered that Testament had used it as a means to revive Justice. Sol fought and mortally wounded Justice, who, recognizing him as Frederick, expressed a wish for the three of them—herself, That Man, and Sol—to talk one last time. Unaware of her true identity as Aria, Sol swore to hunt down That Man.

Guilty Gear X
Less than a year later, Sol learned of another surviving Gear named Dizzy and sought her out. After defeating her guardian, Testament, he confronted and defeated Dizzy herself. However, rather than killing her, he spared her life, acknowledging her will to live. In another outcome, he is forced to unleash his full power through Dragon Install to match Dizzy’s strength, only to be defeated and left impressed by her determination. Realizing the connection between Dizzy and Justice, Sol began to understand her true nature.

Guilty Gear XX
Weeks later, I-No began wreaking havoc to draw Sol’s attention, intending to kill him before he could interfere with That Man’s plans. Warned by Axl Low, Sol pursued her. In one scenario, defeating I-No led him to a confrontation with That Man, who effortlessly repelled Sol’s attacks and warned of an impending conflict even greater than the Crusades. In another, Slayer informed Sol of the Post-War Administration Bureau’s growing activity. Elsewhere, Sol intervened when Dizzy lost control of Necro, freeing her before quietly leaving as she rejoined the Jellyfish Pirates.

Sol’s investigation into the Bureau brought him into further conflict with Ky, leading to another clash between them. Later, he encountered Crow and a clone of Justice before I-No used time manipulation to force Sol to battle his past self, Order-Sol. After Order-Sol’s death, Sol momentarily began to fade from existence, until That Man restored him to the present. Meeting Ky once more, Sol fought and defeated him again, prompting Ky to abandon his pursuit while promising they would cross paths again.

Material Collection
Years later, near New Year’s Eve, Dizzy approached Sol with her young son, Sin, asking him to help Ky, who had fallen into despair under the strain of being appointed as the symbolic king of the newly formed United Kingdoms of Illyria. Sol found a weakened Ky praying at a church and provoked him into a fight. Though Ky struggled and began to lose, the clash reignited the determination in his eyes. The fight only stopped when Sin, frightened, grabbed Sol’s leg and begged him to end it. Afterward, Ky asked Sol to take care of Sin, and Sol agreed.

To manage Sin’s impulsive behavior during their travels, Sol kept him on a leash and forbade him from using his power recklessly. When Sin was a year old, during a visit to Zepp, Sol left briefly to collect a bounty. Upon returning, he found that Sin had lost control and injured several bullies. Sol disciplined both Sin and the bullies, teaching his son restraint and consequence.

Guilty Gear 2
In 2186, at the Village of Witches, Sol and Sin discovered a bounty poster of Sol—a hidden plea for help from Ky—but were soon attacked by the Vizuel. Guided by Izuna, they managed to fend them off. Izuna explained that the Vizuel were destroying Gears, with their next target being Illyria’s capital. There, the group encountered Valentine, whose resemblance to Aria shocked Sol, though she soon left to find a mysterious “key” after assessing their strength.

Inside the castle, they found Ky sealed by magical restraints, and Raven appeared briefly, hinting that his master was involved. After another encounter with Valentine, Sin stayed behind to protect Ky while Sol and Izuna retrieved Dr. Paradigm from Ganymede. Once Paradigm realized Sol was the scientist Frederick, he agreed to help unseal Ky. After recovering his research notes from Underworld Hill, Paradigm dispelled Ky’s seal. When Sol asked about Dizzy, Ky’s silence angered Sin, who stormed off. Ky then revealed Dizzy’s sealed form to them, leading Paradigm to realize that the “key” Valentine sought was Justice’s Gear cells—also within Sin.

Leaving Dizzy under Ky and Paradigm’s care, Sol and Izuna confronted a brainwashed Sin at Bel Canto Valley before chasing Valentine toward the gate to the Backyard. Ky led his forces to hold off the Vizuel so Sol’s group could advance, and Sol ordered Sin to remain with Ky. Sol, Izuna, and Paradigm reached the gate but found it sealed until That Man appeared, effortlessly withstanding Sol’s sudden attack and granting them protection to survive within the Backyard.

Once inside, they pursued Valentine, who had already activated the Cube’s key. Sol disrupted the process while the others held her off. After breaking the key, Sol stayed behind to face Valentine’s final form as the gate began to close. Though he defeated and killed her, her last word—“Frederick”—left him shaken. Resigned to his fate, Sol was met again by That Man, who told him the apocalypse was not over and urged him to live on. Sol asked if Valentine was truly Aria, but That Man replied that the woman they once knew was already dead. Weak but determined, Sol vowed to kill him one day, and That Man promised to wait.

Guilty Gear Vastedge
Preparing for another onslaught from Valentine’s forces, Sol set out to build the Junkyard Dog weapon, which required the Flashing Fang. Discovering that the artifact was under heavy guard in Harden Fort, Sol and Sin fought their way through in July 2187, where they encountered Baldias. They learned that the Conclave secretly controlled the world’s governments. After a fierce battle, Sol defeated Baldias and reclaimed the Flashing Fang.

Guilty Gear Xrd
By October 22, 2187, Sol and Sin were still pursuing the remaining Sacred Treasures when they received word from Ky about Ramlethal Valentine’s declaration of war. Sol accepted the mission to capture her in exchange for a one-million-dollar bounty. Meeting Ky in Neo New York, they set out for Ramlethal’s location and defeated her on October 28. However, her defeat was a distraction for the activation of the Cradle over Babylon, and she attempted to self-destruct to kill Sol.

Sol survived thanks to Ky releasing Elphelt Valentine, who neutralized her sister’s power. Though Sol initially wanted to kill Ramlethal, Ky convinced him to take her alive. Sol distrusted Elphelt and warned her to drop her act, scolding Sin for trying to befriend her. Sin’s rejection of Sol’s cynical worldview caused Sol to begin questioning himself. On November 1, during their travels to Zepp, Ky privately asked Sol what he would do once his revenge ended. Sol had no answer, but Ky reminded him that time moves on, promising that he, Dizzy, and Sin would be waiting for him to “come home.” Later, they met Gabriel and Zato-ONE, who revealed that the Conclave sought to resurrect Justice.

Following Paradigm’s plan, Sol and his allies ambushed the Cradle, though That Man was captured by Bedman and Sol had to be rescued by Elphelt. They soon learned that the Conclave planned to use St. Elmo’s Fire to revive Justice on November 4. During the operation, Sol removed Chronus from within Justice. After the Conclave’s defeat, Elphelt revealed her true purpose—to awaken Justice—and attacked, but Sol forced her emotions to resurface before she and Justice were taken away. Determined not to lose anyone else, Sol swore to save her.

On November 9, Raven approached Sol, Sin, and Ramlethal to capture Jack-O’ Valentine. After catching her on November 17, Sol discovered that Aria and Justice were one and the same. Raven and Jack-O’ departed, and Sol asked Axl to use his powers to find Elphelt, but Axl refused out of fear for the timeline. While returning to the capital, Sol was nearly killed by a massive Gear attack.

Later, while resting in the royal office, Sol and Ky reflected on their past rivalry. Ky’s calm demeanor contrasted Sol’s unease about their shared history. Ky admitted that while he was curious about “Frederick’s” past, he prioritized “Sol Badguy’s” future, offering him a drink and friendship. Slightly drunk, Sol later lectured Ramlethal about pursuing true happiness and overcoming obstacles—demonstrating by breaking a wall—and took her and Sin to meet Danny Missiles.

After a meeting about the Information Flares, Leo treated Sol as an equal, asking him to save the world. Sol insisted he didn’t care about the world, only about saving Elphelt, which was enough for Leo. Following Ramlethal’s apparent death, Sol, Ky, Paradigm, and Leo met with That Man and Jack-O’, who explained that the Universal Will, known as Ariels, was behind everything. Learning that Jack-O’s fusion with Justice could restore Aria, Sol’s guilt overwhelmed him, but Ky pulled him away to calm down. Setting aside his hatred, Sol joined their mission to stop Ariels.

As they traveled, Sin questioned whether Dizzy might be related to Sol, and Ky realized the truth to both their horror. Upon confronting Ariels, Sol, Ky, and Sin fought to hold her off while Jack-O’ prepared to merge with Justice. Thanks to Raven and Ramlethal’s help, Sol defeated Ariels, whose final words acknowledged his change. However, when Justice resisted fusion, Daryl ordered an attack that would destroy her along with Sol and Jack-O’. As Axl compressed time to delay the strike, Ariels protected them, asking Sol to care for her daughters before fading away. With the fusion complete, Aria was restored, and That Man—now addressed by his real name, Asuka—entrusted her to Sol before challenging him to a final duel. Sol accepted.

Later, Sol visited Ky and Dizzy’s home to challenge Ky to a serious fight, believing Ky had always held back. Their duel reignited old emotions as Sol accused Ky of hypocrisy and called Dizzy a monster. Enraged, Ky used his battlefield tactics to defeat Sol completely. When Ky explained that his old methods were meant to help humans face monsters, Sol revealed his true motive: to learn how humans could stand against beings like himself in preparation for his fight with Asuka. Ky understood and agreed to help him.

Guilty Gear -Strive-
Three weeks later, Sol and Jack-O’—still hosting Aria’s dormant consciousness—worked as bounty hunters until Ky summoned them to Illyria Castle. After receiving a permit he had requested, Sol was informed that the United States wanted him present at the G4 Summit to help apprehend I-No. Instead, Sol chose to take a vacation with Jack-O’ in Iseo, but their plans were cut short when Axl warned them of an incident in L’oro Di Illyria, and I-No surrendered herself to Illyrian forces. Realizing she was working with someone else, Sol and Jack-O’ encountered Happy Chaos, along with Nagoriyuki, Chipp, and Anji. Rattled by Chaos’s ability to injure him, Sol returned to the castle to interrogate I-No with Ky.

Though the interrogation failed, Jack-O’ revealed I-No’s incomplete nature and origins. Believing she sought Asuka’s Tome of Origin, Sol accepted the G4 Summit invitation and traveled to the White House. During the summit, Happy Chaos brainwashed the security staff and took the delegates hostage. Sol rescued Vernon, the only one who could access Asuka’s room, and the two coordinated with Gabriel and Leo while avoiding guards and Nagoriyuki. When Chaos activated the White House’s Tír na nÓg mode, Asuka guided Sol and Vernon to the escape chamber, ejecting Chaos into it. Asuka prepared to leave for the moon with the Tome, offering Sol a choice—to kill him or allow him to remove the Flame of Corruption. Sol chose to let Asuka remove it, restoring his humanity. However, Chaos, disguised, fused with Asuka and the Tome, reviving I-No as a goddess.

Despite Asuka’s warning, Sol attacked her with the Outrage but was defeated. I-No ascended, granting humanity her godlike power and threatening to end the world. Ky and Jack-O’ went to confront her, and when Sol awoke, he refused to let Jack-O’ sacrifice herself. He told her that even if Aria never returned, he wouldn’t lose Jack-O’, who carried her spirit. While Ky and Axl distracted I-No, Sol struck her weak point with his zeal pod-powered Outrage, killing her but nearly destroying himself in the process. Sol survived, and a state funeral was held for him as a fallen hero.

Living peacefully as Frederick once more, Sol moved to Iseo with Jack-O’. Running a small junk garage, he spent his days crafting devices, listening to the radio, and building a rocket intended to visit Asuka on the moon.

Dual Rulers
Even without the Flame of Corruption, Sol continued bounty hunting, protecting himself and Sin. During this time, a mysterious girl named Unika appeared, hunting all remaining Gears and injuring Dizzy, prompting Ky to seal himself with her. Sol discovered that Unika was manipulated by Nerville Hammer, who had infected Sin with a virus to control all Gears. When the virus caused them to go berserk, Sol learned that both Nerville and Unika were being used by Nerville’s future self, a nihilistic version of him from an alternate timeline. To stop the infection, Sol shot Sin, preventing the Gears’ rampage. Unika ultimately turned against her future counterpart after witnessing her friend Bridget being hurt. Following the crisis, Dizzy and Ky were unsealed.

After Future Nerville’s defeat, Vernon informed Sol that Unika was now in U.S. custody, training under Giovanna’s supervision. Vernon also encouraged Sol to attend Ky and Dizzy’s wedding. At the ceremony, Sol’s relationship with Dizzy as her father was finally revealed to the public.

Appearance

General Description: Sol Badguy is a tall, muscular man with tan skin, brown hair, and brown eyes that are sometimes shown as golden with slit pupils, hinting at his true identity as a Gear. He keeps his long, spiky hair tied back and wears a red headband inscribed with the words "Rock You," which conceals the Gear brand on his forehead. His physique remains solid and well-built whether or not he is influenced by the Flame of Corruption.

Facial Features: Sol’s expression is often stern or focused, reflecting his rough and battle-hardened nature. His sharp eyes, occasionally golden, contrast with his otherwise rugged features, giving him a distinctive and somewhat intimidating appearance. As Frederick, his human form, his hair is shorter and less spiky, and his eyes appear either brown or blue.

Clothing/Outfit: Sol typically wears a black undershirt beneath a red and black sleeveless jacket, paired with white jeans and several belts. His belt buckle is engraved with the word "FREE," and a red cloth drapes down from it. He completes his look with red shoes and black fingerless gloves. One of his signature accessories is a single belt wrapped around his left bicep. In later appearances, Sol’s outfit evolves into a long-sleeved red leather jacket with handcuff-like straps on the sleeves and a black accent running down the back, maintaining his rugged and battle-ready aesthetic.

Special Features: The red brand hidden under Sol’s headband is the mark of his identity as a Gear. His spiky, waist-length hair and trademark headband have become his most recognizable features across the series.

Alternate Forms/Disguises: As Frederick, Sol appears in a white lab coat, with shorter hair and a more restrained appearance, reflecting his time as a scientist before becoming a Gear.

Personality

  • Aloof and Independent: Sol was initially a solitary individual, preferring to keep others at a distance and maintaining only a small circle of close friends. He is self-reliant and tends to prioritize his own principles over social approval.
  • Sullen and Blunt: Sol speaks little unless necessary, often relying on intimidation or force to assert himself. While perceived as crude or self-centered, these traits mask his difficulty in expressing emotions and thoughts effectively.
  • Intelligent and Stubborn: Despite his rough exterior, Sol is highly intelligent and logical. He becomes frustrated when situations lack clarity or reason and rarely allows the opinions of others to sway his decisions once his mind is made up.
  • Laziness and Efficiency: Sol dislikes exerting effort beyond what is required for his objectives. His combat style reflects this, using unrefined but devastatingly powerful attacks designed to end fights quickly. This approach extends to teaching and other responsibilities, where he often focuses on the essentials only.
  • Compassion Beneath the Tough Exterior: Though he maintains a hardened, anti-social persona, Sol is capable of genuine care and empathy. He spares lives, protects others, and raises Sin with guidance from Ky and Dizzy. He comforts and supports those in need, showing his dedication to preventing further tragedy even when he refuses to openly acknowledge it.
  • Haunted by the Past: Bearing the guilt of past actions—including his involvement in the Gear Project, humanity’s near extinction, and personal losses—Sol initially isolates himself and pursues vengeance against That Man and Gears. These experiences deeply shaped his worldview and motivated his solitary lifestyle.
  • Growth and Connection: Over time, Sol gradually allows himself to engage more with others, slowly changing his outlook. His interactions and responsibilities, particularly as a guardian to Sin and through relationships with allies, help him recognize the value of connection and the influence his actions have on the world. By the later stages of his story, he is more approachable, friendly, and at ease around those close to him.
  • Family and Emotional Vulnerability: Despite a composed demeanor, Sol exhibits nervousness and embarrassment regarding his relationship with Dizzy, especially concerning the possibility of being her father. Over time, he learns to accept and cherish his family, culminating in openly participating in milestones such as his daughter's wedding, reflecting his emotional growth and willingness to embrace personal bonds.

Relationships

Ky Kiske

Sol was briefly under the Sacred Order of Holy Knights but the growing tension between him and Ky Kiske (along with majority of the knights boring him), had him desert the knight's camp and take the Order's most valuable treasures with him[1].

When traveling with Sin, they Sol encounters as bounty for himself, noting to Sin that this is Ky's messed up way of asking for help[2]. When Sol saves him from being trapped within a seal, Ky apologies for putting him through the trouble[3].

While brainwashed Sin reveals his hatred for Ky, claiming that he abandoned Dizzy and him, using justice as an excuse[4]. With Sol noting he doesn't give a damn about his family, but also states that Ky may be a stubborn idiot, but at least he's true to his beliefs with a punk like Sin being alive still thanks to his justice[5].

When Sin tries to say he will go with Sol, he gets punched over to Ky, with it being Sol's tough way of essentially telling him to speak with his dad[6].

Ky notes that he is indebted to Sol as Ky wanted to see how much Sin has grown[7].

During the after story of -Revelator-, Sol admits that Ky is truly stronger then him without Dragon Install, and how he's never gotten serious once against him in a fight and wishes to fight him seriously[8].

In their fight Sol ends up losing noting that he still didn't fight seriously and Sol didn't transform[9].

Sin Kiske

Sin is Sol's essential grandson, training him as a bounty hunter.

Sol has been raising Sin since he was little[10]. He makes notes that he taught Sin how to read[11].

While brainwashed Sin reveals his hatred for Ky, claiming that he abandoned Dizzy and him, using justice as an excuse[12]. With Sol noting he doesn't give a damn about his family, but also states that Ky may be a stubborn idiot, but at least he's true to his beliefs with a punk like Sin being alive still thanks to his justice[13].

When Sin tries to say he will go with Sol, he gets punched over to Ky, with it being Sol's tough way of essentially telling him to speak with his dad[14].

Sin later tells Ky to not act like his dad and he views Sol as his only dad[15].

Justice

Sol wishes to destroy Justice as he wishes to destroy all gears. He notes that this is due to them being forged by the will of greedy human beings and so gears are nothing more than a symbol of everything wrong with the world, thus he will never stop until he's destroyed every gear[16].

Intelligence: Genius Intelligence (Sol is able to instantly grasp incantations[103], noted that since Sol is the scientist from 100 years ago, he can guess the origin of magic[104]. Bedman calls Sol one hell of a scientist, as he figured out a way to keep his real power under wraps so people still think he's human[105]. With the help of Asuka Kreutz and Aria, aided in creating Gear Cells infused with magic[106]. Noticed a unique electromagnetic wave emitted whenever Unika uses magic and built a device to detect it[107])

Knowledge: Grandmaster level (Ky Kiske and Sol Badguy are considered the best of the best[108]. Made a box that can transform itself into a motorcycle to freely travel around with in his spare time[109])

Notable Techniques

Gatling Combo System

Gatling Combos involve chaining together normal attacks, always increases or staying the same level of strength. After a Gatling Combo, the fighter can then usually cancel, or two-in-one, into a Special Move.

Charge Attack

Fighters have a special move that can be charged up for increased power, this is accomplished by charging their special in order to use an enhanced version of an attack that reaches all the way to level 3.

Instant Kill System

Instant Kill moves are moves that are a fighter's most powerful technique. Defeating an opponent with the Instant Kill will end the match immediately, regardless of the round the fighters are on.

Chaos Moves

Chaos Moves are super-powerful attacks that takes a completely full Chaos Bar to use. These moves do far more damage then a fighters standard attacks.

Dash / Back-Dash / Air Dash

Fighters can dash forward, do a back dash, and dash even in mid air, allowing for greater mobility of moving around their opponents during fights.

High Jump

A high jump is much higher then a regular jump, and a forward or backward High Jump travels all the way across the screen. A Double Jump cannot be performed during a High Jump.

Knockdown Evasion

When a fighter gets hit with an attack that knocks down, they will flip out of the hit immediately, ready to retaliate.

Double Jump

A fighter can jump once on the ground and once again in the air, allowing them to reach higher and out of reach spots from other fighters.

Throws

Fighters can grab opponents to throw them, being able to throw them either forward or backwards.

Mid-Air Turn

Through pressing the Taunt Button when in mid-air, the fighter can turn around and face the opposite direction, this technique can be useful to attack from behind.

Aerial Combos

Fighters have an Aerial Combo Launcher, which allows them to launch the opponent into the air, they can follow with a Chase Jump where they can attack the opponent with a multi-hit, mid-air Gatling Combo.

Dead-Angle Attack

When blocking an opponent's attacks, the fighter can quickly input a Special Move command to cancel their block animation and strike the enemy while they're still attacking.

Perfect Guard

Unlike normal blocking which drains a small amount of life when blocking against a special move or Chaos Move, the Perfect Guard can block without losing any life at all. Though the Perfect Guard will drain the fighter's Chaos Bar, and if they have no Chaos Energy at all, they will not be able to use Perfect Guard.

Faultess Defense

Through inputing the punch and kick simultaneously while pushgin the directional button for a guard position, the fighter enters a special guard condition that creates a barrier around them. This prevents opponents from shaving away at their strength with deadly attacks and the knock back is greater than when using normal guards, giving the fighter more time to ready an attack against their opponent. This also enables the ability to guard against attacks that cannot be guarded against during jumps. However, while performing Faultess Defense the Tension Gauge decreases, once it is fully depleted the fighter can no longer use Fautless Defense.

Roman Cancel

While hitting an opponent with an attack, pushing any of the attack buttons will forcefully stop attack actions and return the character to a normal standing pose. This allows the fighter to create their own original combo moves and hit unique attacks the opponent was not expecting.

Jump Cancel

There are certain attacks that can be cancelled mid-move into a jump, being called a Jump Cancel. When hitting an opponent with, or guarding against certain attacks, press the Directional button UP to cancel into a jump. Successful use of this can help to enhance their combo techniques.

Counter Hit

While the opponent is trying to use a move, the fighter can counter attack by hitting them with one of their attacks, because the opponent's time off balance is increased, this move allows for use of combo attacks that normally couldn't be used.

Recovery Direction

When using a recovery move by pushing a directional button, the fighter can recover from a knock down in the direction pressed, this can provide with a chance for a counterattack if used correctly.

Instant Kill Technique

As the name implies, these are the ultimate deadly attack that can do away with opponents with a single blast. Due to the sheer power of these moves, they take a long time to unleash. Unleashing an Instant Kill attack, completely depletes the Tension Gauge, thus missing this move at all makes the fighter struggle worse as they won't be able to use various actions that require the Tension Gauge.

Guard

Push the directional button opposite of the direction of the fighter's opponent to guard against attacks. There are standing and crouching guards which guard against the respective areas, with standard guard defending against high and mid-level attacks while crouch guarding defends against low attacks. Fighters can even guard during jumps to protect against attacks in the air.

Two-Level Jumps

Fighters can jump again while in the air.

Gatling Combo

A method of linking normal moves together as combo attacks. The moment a fighter hits an opponent with a normal attack, they proceed to enter commands for another normal attack to create combos. The number of moves that can be used in combos vary with each character.

Overdrive Attack

Over Drive attacks are powerful attacks that use up 50% of the Tension Gauge. The commands for the move vary with each character.

High Jump

Press the down then up directional buttons quickly to jump higher than the usual jumps, though a Two-Level jump cannot be used after a High Jump.

Forward Thrust Attack

With a Punch or Heavy Attack common to all characters, keep the right directional button pressed down while attacking to transform attacks.

Dead Angle Attack

At the instant the fighter has guarded against an opponent's attack, push two attack buttons simultaneously while pushing down on the right directional button to counterattack from the guard position. The Tension Gauge needs to be at 50% or above for this move.

Dust Attack

By pushing a Slash and Heavy Slash button, the fighter can use attacks that break crouching guards. Opponents attacked with this move will be spun around and knocked down, becoming temporarily defenseless. At this time, push up on the directional button for the fighter to pounce on the opponent and have a perfect chance to strike back with a combo attack.

Sweep

Push a Slash and Heavy Slash button while in crouch to use the Sweep move. If this attack hits the opponent, they cannot bounce back from the attack with a recovery move.

Tension Gauge

The Tension Gauge is a gauge that shows a character's hostility, which holds the key to victory. The power of this gauge increases when the fighter uses aggressive moves like moving forward, dashing, forward jumps, and attacks. As the power of this gauge increases more moves can be used.

Recovery

When knocked down after being attacked, push any 2 attack buttons simultaneously while in the air to regain balance. This moves enables the fighter to quickly ready themself against the next attack.

Throw

Push the right or left directional button near an opponent and push the Heavy Slash button to activate this special attack. It's a risky move as the fighter needs to be near an opponent, though the opponent cannot guard against this, making it an effective move to mix in with normal attacks.

Psych Burst

Allows the fighter to not only knock back enemies but also increase the Tension Gauge to "MAX" b meeting certain conditions. The Pysch Burst can only be used when the Burst Gauge reaches "MAX" and it redners them invulnerable for a set tie when activated, but it cannot be activated while the fighter s hit by an Overdrive Attack or when being thrown.

Two-Level Jumps

Lets the fighter jump again while in the air.

High Jump

Press down then up on the directional buttons quickly to jump higher then a usual jump.

Forward Thrust Attack

With a Punch or Heavy Slash common to all characters, keep the right direction button pressed down while attacking to transform attacks.

Dead Angle Attack

At the instant the fighter guarded against an opponent's attack, push any two attack buttons simultaneously while pushing the right directional button to counterattack from the guard position.

The Tension Gauge must be at 50% or above for this move.

Dust Attack

By pushing the Dust button, fighters can use attacks that spin around and knock down the opponents. This causes them to become temporarily defenseless. At this time, push up on the directional button to pounce on the opponent. It's a perfect chance to strike back with a combo attack.

Sweep

Push a Dust button while in a crouch to use the Sweep move. If this attack hits the opponent, they cannot bounce back from the attack with a Recovery move.

Recovery

When knocked down after being attacked, push any two attack buttons simultaneously while in the air to regain their balance. This move enables them to quickly ready themself against the next attack.

Throw

Push the right or left directional button near an opponent and push a Heavy Slash button to actiavte this special attack.

Approach an opponent during a jump while pushing the directional button in the direction of their approach and push the heavy slash button to be able to body toss the enemy during a jump.

During a Dash or Backstep, the fighter can not use a throw move.

Gatling Combo

A method of linking normal moves together as combo attacks. The moment they hit an opponent with a normal attack, enter the commands for another normal attack to create combos. The number of moves that can be used in combos vary with each character.

Overdrive Attack

These are very powerful attacks that use up 50% of the Tension Gauge. The command for this move varies on the fighter.

Instant Kill

As the name implies, this is the ultimate deadly attack that can do away with opponents in a single blast. As these moves are very powerful, they take a long tme to unleash.

Faultless Defense

Push the punch and kick button simultaneously while pushing the directional button for a guard position to enter a special guard condition that creates a special barrier around the fighter. This prevents opponents from shaving away through a fighter's strength with deadly attacks, and the knock back is greater than when a fighter uses normal guards, giving them more time to ready an attack against the opponent. They can also guard against attacks that cannot be guarded against during jumps.

While performing the Faultless Defense, the tension gauge decreases in real time, when the Tension Gauge powr is depleted, this guard can no longer be used.

Jump Cancel

There are certain normal moves where fighters can forcibly stop hitting an opponent with an attack or stop guarding against an attack and link it to a jump. By using these attacks, the fighter can combine these with attacks to widen their repertoire of combo attacks.

Roman Cancel

While hitting your opponent with an attack, push any three of the attack buttons except Dust button to forcefully stop attack actions and return the character to a normal standing pose. With the application of the move, fighters can create their own original combo attack. In order to perform a Roman Cancel, the Tension Gauge must be at least 50% full.

Counter Hit

While the opponent is trying to use a move, the fighter can counter attack by hitting them with one of their attacks. Because the opponent's time off balance is increased, the move allows the fighter to use combo attacks that they normally couldn't use.

Recovery Direction

When the fighter uses a Recovery move, they can recover from a knock down in the direction pressed. A recovery can provide the chance to counterattack if used correctly.

Slip

Specific Normal Moves, Special Moves, and Overdrive Attacks have the special ability to put opponents into a "slip" condition. When the fighter hits an opponent with these moves, they render enemies defenseless for a set time.

Two-Level Jumps

The fighter can jump again while in mid-air.

High Jump

The fighter can jump higher than usual by quickly pressing the directional input down and up. However, Two-Level jumps cannot be used after a High Jump.

Forward Thrust Attack

Through pressing the directional button while pressing the Punch or Heavy Slash buttons, the fighter can transform attacks.

Psych Burst

The fighter becomes temporarily invincible and knocks away the opponent when the Burst Gauge is at max. This technique cannot be used while taking damage from an Overdrive Attack or while being thrown. The Tension Gauge also maxes out whenever the fighter hits an opponent with a move.

Dust Attack

A fighter launches a Dust Attack by pressing Dust while standing. It's impossible to guard against a Dust Attack by crouching. After hitting the opponent with a Dust Attack, press the directional button to chase the opponent and him them with a combo attack while in the air.

Sweep

The fighter uses the Sweep move on the opponent by pressing the Dust button while crouching. A swept opponent cannot use a Recovery move.

Recovery

The fighter can regain balance when knocked down by pressing any attack button in midair.

Throws

The fighter can throw their opponent by pressing the directional button while pressing Heavy Slash when near the opponent. The opponent can also be thrown while in midair using the same method.

Throw Escape

The fighter can escape the opponent's throw while they are on the ground or in mid air through pressing the directional button while pressing Heavy Slash. This technique cannot be used while unconscious or launching an attack.

Gatling Combos

The fighter can create a combo out of a series of Normal Moves, launching a second attack as soon as the opponent is hit with the first attack. The number of moves that can be used for this technique are different for each fighter.

Force Break

It's a unique Special Move that consumes 25% of the Tension Gauge. Commands for this technique vary for each character.

Overdrive Attacks

These are extremely powerful attacks that consume 50% of the Tension Gauge. Commands for this technique vary for each character.

Instant Kills

As the name suggests, this is the ultimate attack that can knockout the opponent in one blow. Although these moves are extremely powerful, it takes time to successfully execute them.

Faultless Defense

While simultaneously holding down any two attack buttons except Dust, press a directional button in the direction the fighter wants to defend in order to enter a special guard called "Faultless Defense". In this state, fighters life won't be consumed when guarding against opponents Special Moves, but the opponent will knock the fighter back further than usual. This technique can be used to guard an attack which normally cannot be defended in mid-air.

Jump Cancel

The fighter can override certain moves, such as hitting the opponent or being blocked by the opponent by jumping out of a move when the fighter is midway through it. This technique can create great varieties in attacks and combos.

Counter Hit

By hitting the opponent in the middle of a move, the fighter can counterattack the opponent's attacks. A counter hit staggers an opponent longer than usual, so it gives a fighter a great chance to try combos they wouldn't normally pull off.

Recovery Direction

Press any directional button while recovering to move towards that direction as the fighter recovers.

Staggering

Certain Normal Moves, Special Moves, and Overdrive Attacks can put the opponent in a "stagger" state after a hit. A "stagger" opponent is temporarily defenseless.

Instant Block

Guarding against the opponent's attack right before it hits activates the "Instant Block". This will cause the fighter to start shining white with a bright light. Unlike a normal guard, which has a period where the fighter cannot move or attack, this time frame is shorter for Instant Block. Thi technique is helpful for guarding against attacks from close range.

Slash Back

Simultaneously pressing Slash, Heavly Slash, and the directional button in the direction the fighter guards against creates a yellow effect.

If successful, the yellow effect flashes and will dramatically cut the stun time after a guard; however, the fighter becomes temporarily defenseless if it fails.

Roman Cancel

While hitting the opponent with an attack, simultaneously press any three attack buttons, except Dust, to cancel the attack move. This technique allows the fighter to create their own original combo attacks. However, it consumes 50% of the Tension Gauge.

Force Roman Cancel

Each fighter has several attack moves that are compatible with this technique, while using one of those attacks, simultaneously press any three attack buttons except Dust of a certain timing to cancel the attack move and return to a standing pose. The best timing to input the command varies for each attack move, and if the timing is missed, it fails. When it's successfully activated, the technique consumes 25% of the Tension Gauge.

Free Mode & Lock-on Mode

Free Mode

It's a normal mode where a fighter can freely move around the battlefield, in this mode fighters can unleash attacks that cover a wide-range to hit multiple foes, but the power of the attacks are rather weak.

Lock-On Mode

Lock-on Mode is an effective technique for one-on-one skirmishes or situations where a fighter would like to target a single foe. Through holding a lock-on on a target, attacks are far more powerful, catering to one-on-one battles, combined with directional input, they can use vertical or horizontal attacks on enemies to shake them up.

Aerial Dash

During a jump, press A to perform a forward dash in mid-air. The fighter uses aerial dashes to jump over units or shortening the gap during aerial combos.

Step

Use the directional input and A while locking on to use a step movement. The distance it covers may be short, but through taking advantage of its speed, one can avoid attacks from enemies or shake them up during an attack.

Blast Drive

Through usage of the left stick button, the fighter is able to run like the wind, being able to accelerated and decelerate respectively.

Drift

During a blast drive, a fighter can perform sharp turns, allowing them to keep their momentum.

Auto Guard

If a fighter is not performing an action, they will automatically guard head-on attacks. However, auto-guard does not block attacks from behind or while the fighter is performing attacks. Along with this, guarding opponent's attacks too much will cause a guard crash, making them defenseless.

Modern Cancel

A technique that skips the recover animation of attacks, allowing the fighter to immediately perform another. With Modern Cancels, the fighter cna combine attacks that normally do not combo to forcibly create a combo, or completely bypass the defenseless state of their attacks during their recovery animation.

Cyclone Blast

It's an emergency-evasion technique that releases a sphere-shaped energy when the fighter is attacked to knock enemies away. This move is effective for escaping an attack from a group of enemies, however it requires a lot of tension.

Short Dash

While in lock-on the fighter can quickly move a short distance, being able to quickly shorten the gap between themself and the opponent.

Power Attack

The fighter unleashes a powerful attack that has a slow start animation. It has a high guard crash rate.

Avoid Knockdown and Falling Techniques

When the fighter takes damage from an enemy and are knocked down as a result, press A in mid-air at an appropriate time to use "Avoid Knockdown" to quickly regain their balance.

By pressing A right before the fighter hits the ground, the fighter will be able to use "Falling Techniques" to quickly get up.

Super Backstep

Allows the fighter to travel a longer distance than a normal backstep, an important technique to quickly distance oneself from the enemy.

Homing Jump

Press A while locking on to jump toward the target. They can also use an air dash to charge toward their target.

Weaknesses

Explanations

The Backyard

When studying the energy that shouldn't exist (magic), a theory arose: that being the Backyard, a superior dimension[312]. The Backyard is described by Sol as a virtual space though is refuted as the other way around, where the main world is the one that's a virtual space[313]. The Backyard is the term used to give reason to the five element configuration[314], in other worlds, it's "something" that conveys the information that defines the fundamental truth of this world[315]. The magic people like Sol and Sin use are different from the alchemy that uses resources from present numbers, magic users like Sol and Sin forcefully borrow some kind of "reason" from that "something"[316], being described as an obscure world that magic users temporarily access to gain power[317]. Just as the Earth can't exist if there's no universe, this world cannot exist unless they have that "something"[318], being larger then the universe[319]. Roughly put, it's a world that can rewrite the rules of the universe in any way it wants[320]. The Backyard can be explained as a book or library that has the theory of the world written on it[321]. It's responsible for the usage of irregular magic even scientists such as Sol have never seen before[322], allowing people to use magic that disproves the fundamentals of magic[323]. The Backyard was discovered by a Philosopher, being described to rule all things in the universe and from within it, one could understand any truth or even bend the world as they please[324]. Sol notes that if Valentine could freely access the Backyard, then she can also mess with the world's fate[325]. Asuka Kreutz notes that if someone strays too far into the Backyard, their soul breaks down under the pressure of the information's density[326]. In Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign-, the Backyard is defined as a world separate from our own, yet somehow controlling it, what's hidden behind its gates are the eternal truths, including good & evil, creation & destruction, and of chaos the likes of which mankind has never seen[327]. The Backyard is a space connected by people's dreams[328]. Axl traveling in the Backyard with I-No noted how his body felt heavy and his head felt weird, with I-No noting they're in a field created by That Man so they could exist in the Backyard in the flesh[329]. When a normal life form enters the Backyard they turn to dust, the Backyard is composed of high-density information which governs all of creation, any normal creature is instantly crushed by that wealth of data[330]. The Backyard has no effect on any non-living matter[331]. RoboMay explains the Backyard as composed of extremely dense information that governs the creation of all material things and by adding new information to it, one could easily deform the world itself[332]. Noting that it is a dangerous place that could literally cause the world to break[333].

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: Shouldn't they scale to the higher levels of magic naturally?

A: This would not make much senses as it there are scenes that showcase the cast do not regularly produce those levels of energy, Ramlethal was going to destroy the ship they (Sol Badguy, Ky Kiske, Sin Kiske, & Elphelt Vaentine) were flying on, claiming "We're thirty-four thousand feet up. If this ship goes down, I doubt anyone will survive"[343], Dizzy's instant kill is a massive explosion that the explosion alone scares all fighters into surrendering[344], Jack-O's instant kill causes an explosion so wide it can be seen from the planet, however the planet is overall fine[345], etcetera. It makes much more sense that they are at far lower levels normally and can reach or even ignore higher levels through tapping into the Backyard.

His assistants were sitting on the desk, wondering about the state of their master, who was reading the data. From his face, it looked like he was somewhat tense.
    —"What’s wrong, Doctor?"
—"H-Hmm..., I’ll explain to you what I could read from the output data..."
    —"Y-Yes."
—"It seems that the sphere recently was a kind of boundary that connects this world with the Backyard. The magical light waves optimized for the Backyard’s observation, emitted toward the center of the sphere, sent back values that cannot be quantified. On the other hand, the magical light waves of this world sent back real numbers. In other words, the interior of that sphere is this world, and the molecules that make up that 'door' seem to have been subjected to a special magical process. Seeing the absorption rate of the magical light waves, there is no doubt about it."
—"U-Umm, then, what does that mean?"
—"That is... it closely resembles the special chord I use for the observation of the Backyard."
—"Doctor, forgive me, but I don’t know how you can observe the Backyard"
—"Oh, that’s right... I haven’t taught you that. Simply put, we observe the Backyard from this world by ‘substituting’ the world’s theorem partially with the Backyard’s theorem. It’s the best I could do to send real numbers to the Backyard — I cannot do physical interferences... However, that sphere was made by a physical interference in the Backyard from this world. Which means... someone before me was successful in making physical contact with the Backyard."
*[A reference to “chord substitution” in music theory]*
—"Ha... then, does that mean there are people who are smarter than you, Doctor?"
—"It’s frustrating, but that may be so. But leaving that issue aside, the problem is..."
    —"...Problem?"
—"Is who it is...Although it is somewhat unlikely, only one person comes to mind."
    —"Eh, who!?"
—"As I mentioned earlier, we use a 'substitute' chord to observe the Backyard from this world. But actually, this chord didn’t originate from me. It is a part of the source extracted from the genetic information contained in Gear Cells, which I modified and decoded."
    —"Gear Cells?"
—"Yes...The molecular binding that made up the sphere from earlier had a chord habit commonly found in Gear Cells. It’s unpleasant, but that sphere was probably created by... ‘That Man’."
    —"That Man... the GEAR MAKER!?"
—"Yes, the GEAR MAKER. The villain that caused the Crusades.""
