~ Richter Belmont to Count Dracula |
Background
Descending from the legendary and powerful Juste Belmont, the new member of the Belmont Clan, Richter Belmont, grew up in the same peaceful village as he. Richter was trained in combat and was quickly realized to be a prodigious vampire hunter. Once he came of age, Juste passed the Vampire Killer whip onto Richter.
Richter, unlike Juste however, was quite the ladies man; he had several women who flocked over him, and had gotten himself a girlfriend, Annette, who lived in the village of Aljiba. One day, on his way to visit Annette, Richter noticed that the entire village was on fire and being overrun by monsters, and that Annette had been kidnapped.
A century had passed since Simon’s defeat of Dracula, and not the Dark Lord was back again; this time, Dracula had kidnapped several women, who he used to lure Richter to him. Making haste, Richter fought his way through Dracula’s Castle, and ran into a young girl related to the Belmont Clan, Maria Renard. Maria insisted on joining Richter despite her age, and the two rescued Annette before making it to Dracula’s chambers.
Dracula thought he was prepared for Richter’s onslaught, but his prodigious powers and magical abilities (likely inherited from Juste) were too much to handle. At last, Dracula was defeated; although, this time, he had a contingency plan. Though Dracula himself may have been killed, his servant, Shaft, remained. Shaft used a dark incantation on Richter, succeeding in possessing the vampire hunter.
Shaft used Richter’s selfish desire of becoming the most famous vampire hunter and inflated it, causing Richter to develop a desire to resurrect Dracula so that he may continue battling him for eternity. Richter became the lord of Dracula’s Castle for the next five years, eventually causing Maria, and the newly-awoken Alucard, to investigate.
Alucard finally made his way to Richter in his chambers, and discovered the truth of his possession. Alucard defeated the Belmont, freeing him of his possession, and traversed ahead to tackle Dracula himself. Richter, left behind to reflect on the past five years, deeply regretted his actions.
Finding Maria and heading home, Richter was ashamed of what he had done, even though he didn’t do so willingly. Feeling as though he shamed his entire bloodline, Richter no longer felt worthy of the Vampire Killer whip, and so he forfeited it to another Clan; the Morris Clan. Richter then continued the Belmont Clan’s blood when he had children with Annette, although he likely lived the rest of his days in shame.

Powers and Techniques
Superhuman Physical Characteristics (The Belmonts are known as the most powerful and renowned vampire hunters within the world of Castlevania[45]. During and before Trevor's time[46], the Belmont's were feared because of their immense power[47]), Acrobatics (Due to Belmonts superhuman nature, they possess very athletic and acrobatic bodies, examples include Richter easily flipping over Death's scythe attack while also jumping around and fighting Death while on a moving horse carriage[48]. Richter also showcases this with his boss fight in Dracula X where he must jump across platforms while also fighting against Dracula[49]. Julius showcasing extreme acrobatic leaps to reach the top of a castle drawbridge[50]), Genius Intelligence (Belmonts are trained and some of the best users of various sub-weapons, which in Castlevania requires one to have a high intelligence to be able to do[51]), Martial Arts (Trevor left behind all of his fighting techniques to each new Belmont clan member and Morris clan member[52]), Weapon Mastery (No matter the Belmont, they have all showcase a natural gift in using weapons, with Christopher showcasing the tools of his family's destiny are always the axe, dagger, cross, & stop watch[53]. Belmonts are pillars of strength, willing to keep fighting even when weakened greatly and having their existence slowly erased from history[56]. Simon claims that the Belmonts and Morrises did not defeated Dracula because of the Vampire Killer, with the reason behind heroes' capacity to fight against evil lying not in their physical strength but the noble desire to drive away evil and usher in all that is good, the desire to protect the world for all of humanity, with the courage to fight to protect others being the true essence of a hero and a Belmonts strength, with this even applying for other heroes such as Shanoa, Maria, Charlotte, and even Arikado[57]), Aura (Belmonts release a glow of aura around them[58], that envelops their body[59]), Extrasensory Perception (Belmonts can feel others being in an area, such as Simon Belmont being able to feel Trevor Belmont is in the time rift[60]. Julius when fighting Soma could feel the evil spirit within Soma but also Soma's good spirit[70]. Belmonts have the ability to sense the presence of beings physical and spiritual that cannot be seen by ordinary humans[71]), Precognition (Premonitions; Belmonts can have future premonitions through their dreams, such as Christopher dreaming about Dracula stealing his son and turning him evil, far before he even had one[72]), Magic (Due to coming into contact with Rinaldo and gaining the whip, Rinaldo granted him a magic amulet[73]. where Leon gained magical energy that would naturally be passed down to all of his descendants[74]. Medusa even noted that it wasn't so powerful before believing the whip gained its complete form[82]. Belmonts can call upon the power of the light and use it to amplify their strength to be stronger and faster[83], this is also shown with Trevor Belmont's ultimate in Castlevania Judgment[84]. The Belmonts can use their stored energy (hearts) and transfer it into subweapons to make regular weapons as strong as they are along with magically enhancing them[85]), Invulnerability (Belmonts have an inborn self-defense ability known as "Burning Mode" which makes them invincible and raises their status to twice the normal level[86]), Statistics Boost (Belmonts get stronger from hearing of someone's grief, wanting to help them[87]), Reactive Power Level (As Dracula grows stronger each time he revives, the Belmonts have had to keep up, evolving to be powerful even without the strength of the Vampire Killer[88]), Sealing (Metaphysical Sealing; Belmonts can capture the spirits of enemies equal or greater to an area boss and use their abilities from their soul[89]), Nullification (Sealing Nullification; Belmonts such as Julius can compltely destroy barriers, however depending on how strong the barrier is, they may have no more energy to fight[90])

Flame Whip
Richter levitates in the air, gaining fire powers into his body, then swings a longer, wider version of his whip, covered with flames. It lasts only for one attack. In Symphony of the Night Richter swings his arms, accumulating energy into his body and, for about 35 seconds, his Vampire Killer whip is enveloped in flames when he attacks (his body flashes red-orange during this time period).
Thousand Edge
Richter throws a barrage of knives forward. Very useful against some standing bosses.
Spiral Axe
Richter levitates in the air while axes rotate around him in a circle. The axes then fly out, damaging all enemies on screen.
Holy Cross (Boomerang)
Richter accumulates energy, then he levitates in the air, covered with a large light beam, and giant crosses are summoned, from the floor to the air, to revolve around the beam which then spreads out dealing damage to all enemies on the screen. A myriad of cross boomerangs will hurl through the air at various angles, damaging most things on the screen.
Hydro Storm
Richter levitates in the air and a rain of holy water is summoned all over the screen, dealing damage to enemies and great damage to bosses. The rain will last a few seconds.
Grand Cross
Richter levitates in the air and a giant crucifix is shown in the center of the screen, then it will fly upward, covering all the screen with its attack, before it vanishes.
Magic Book
Richter throws a circle of Bible pages, which continuously spins and goes forward, damaging enemies in front of him. Other versions have the books circle around and form a glyph that shoots out a massive energy beam.
Pocket Watch
Richter summons twelve stars, with the same position of the twelve numbers of a clock, damaging all enemies near them. Has a very high heart cost. In Dracula X, a set of orbs will revolve around Richter while time is slowed and then burn up when time is up. In Symphony of the Night, Richter summons four clocks that do the same thing as the normal Stopwatch. When they end their countdown, each clock will fire a bolt of lightning straight ahead as they vanish.
Lightning Bolt
Richter points to the sky and lightning spreads out from his finger, damaging all enemies on-screen.
Vibhuti
Richter points toward the sky and, from his finger, a cloudy eruption of white ashes damages anything unfortunate enough to be caught there.
Rebound Stone
Richter points to the sky and, from his finger, numerous stones are sent upward, damaging enemies above him. Once about 8 stones are accumulated in the same place, a flash will fill the screen, damaging all enemies.
Key
Richter levitates in the air holding out the key, but nothing happens. He is still invincible during this time, though, and the key will damage enemies that touch it.
Other
Standard Tactics
- Regular: Richter will use his families whip along with various sub-weapons and item crashes that best suit the situation.
- Mind Controlled Richter acts much like Dracula, where he will not directly attack and instead have one travel through the entire castle and reach him at the throne room. If one reaches him, he will fight them and utilize the same tactics as his regular self.
Weaknesses
- Unique Weaknesses: Richter has a weakness to the dark status effect[388].
- Symphony of the Night: He was completely possessed by Shaft for the better part of five years, and completely ruled over Dracula’s Castle (while resurrecting Dracula himself) for those five years.
- Creature of the Night Weaknesses: Creatures of the night become weaker when exposed to the morning sun[389]. Garlic significantly weakens creatures of the night[390], and causes demons to die if its placed on the ground[391]. If a vital soul is defeated, the grimoire will revert back to its original content[392].
Note
- Contrary to popular belief, holy attacks and the whips in Castlevania can affect and harm people that aren't apart of the creatures of the night. Leon's Doppelganger can use holy water and holy attacks against him in this fight along with the alchemy whip despite Leon being a pure and noble warrior[393]. Simon's Doppelganger can harm him with the vampire killer, despite Simon being a noble hero.
Trivia
- Richter's given name is a German word, which literally means "judge" when translated.
- Richter was given his name by composer Akira Sōji (Akiropito), who named him after his favorite conductor, Karl Richter[394].
- The original Rondo of Blood version of Richter closely resembles Ryu from the Street Fighter series by Capcom. This design was not reused in his following appearances in Symphony of the Night nor in The Dracula X Chronicles.
- Richter returned with his original design once more in the 2018 crossover fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, alongside Street Fighter's Ryu.
- Richter can be seeing wielding a white leather whip in some of the earliest strategy guides for Rondo of Blood; however, Richter has never used a leather whip in any of his appearances (except for the opening cutscene of Dracula X).
- When Richter is encountered in the Colosseum area of Symphony of the Night, he says: "Open, Hell's Gate! Come forth, my servants! Crush this flea who invades my castle!", which foreshadows who was controlling him.
- Coincidentally, Kiyoyuki Yanada, Richter's Japanese voice, also dubbed Shaft in the same game.
- Both of Richter's English and Japanese voice actors from the original PlayStation version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night have already passed away, Scott McCulloch and Kiyoyuki Yanada, respectively.
- It is possible to see a fingernail painted over one glove in one of Richter's artworks for Symphony of the Night, which may imply that his original redesign didn't have gloves in the first place.
- The theme song "Chapel of Dissonance" from Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, is Richter's theme song "Opposing Bloodlines" slowed down, giving the reference to the upcoming birth of himself even from his ancestor's game.
- Richter's English voice actor in The Dracula X Chronicles (and onward), David Vincent, also provided the voice of Wind/Eric Lecarde in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.
- Richter is one of the three character to be the main character in an alternate character mode in more than one game. The other two are Maria Renard and Julius Belmont.

“…… If so, why did you take power away from the crack in the eclipse’s seal? If you just intend to imitate like a monkey, isn’t your own power enough?”
Those were the emotionless words of Death.
In response, Olrox laughed his bold answer.
“As I’ve said, I would equally gain control over the human world and the source of Dracula’s power, chaos. I do not intend to obey someone else’s mind aside from my own. That includes you who were born out of chaos.”
“……”
“You should be glad though to know yourself. Just by stealing power, my shameful monotonous time is over…… Even before Alucard appeared, just because I showed up and declared war on him.”
Olrox’s voice was mixed with a tinge of thin delight. He respectfully bowed to Death who completely killed his emotions.
“I would end the reincarnation cycle of this demon castle. I who understood and was spun out of the stains of chaos, swear to rob that power with my hands. Now, yield.”
With Death’s reply, an explosive murderous intent rose.
Two bronze colored scythes much larger than usual appeared; it advanced to the space in between the two men with an intention to cut off Olrox’s head.
Kill the distance-----
Kill the sound-----
Just, faster, soon, die.
It can be seen that the blades have certainly caught Olrox’s neck, but----- that is only an after image and the vampire is already at Death’s back.
“……die.”
That was said by the enemy who called on his servants.
From the surrounding space, a group of purple bats rose, passed by Olrox’s arm with the speed of a bullet, attacking Death. However, Death did not show any gesture of avoiding them. He simply faced Olrox and sprayed out numerous scythes.

“I picked this up at the garden and I believe this is yours, right? Old man Julius also uses a whip. I came here just to deliver this to ya.”
Whoosh, receiving the thrown whip, Michelle noticed that it was the magical whip that serves as Curtis’ weapon.
“That’s great……! Curtis! With this your power-----“
In order to shake away the confusion she had a while ago, Michelle raised her voice, but-----
“Sorry, but…… with my current self, I could not handle it.”
“……? What are you talking about? Curtis……”
was he still confused, Michelle made him grip his whip.
Snap, some kind of popping sound rang and Michelle felt a light shock in her arm.
“Uh……!?”
What happened, she directed her eyes on the origin of the shock-----
A part of the whip’s handle had a rotten like disintegration-----
A part of Curtis’ hand was burned, and that skin immediately returned back to as before.
----- No way……
“Curtis……?”
“……I am currently weak at holy magic.”

The bats and scythes cancelled each other out and the entire dance hall sparkled with blood." - ↑ Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Richter Mode Reverse Colosseum
