~ Excerpt from Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku explaining the four pillars that guard Dracula's Castle |
Background
The Giant Bat is a recurring boss in the Castlevania series. As a massive bat symbolically tied to vampires, it instills fear in all who encounter it. It is notable for being the very first boss to appear in the series.
He serves as one of the four pillars that guard Dracula's Castle from many hunters that enter.
In most games, the Giant Bat is portrayed as being composed of a swarm of smaller bats. In Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, it is revealed that this creature is one of the three core components of Dracula's power, alongside the Flame Demon and the Succubus. Dracula himself often takes the form of a giant bat or a swarm of bats during many of his encounters.
The Giant Bat has appeared under various names and forms throughout the series, including:
- Phantom Bat
- Zapf Bat: A bat composed of treasure.
- Darkwing Bat: A bat specializing in wind-based attacks.
- Bat Company: A swarm of bats that can merge to form various shapes.
- Twin Bats: Two giant bats working together.

Powers and Techniques
Is a Children of the Night, which gives:
- Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[41], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[42])
- Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[43])
- Immortality
- Ageless: The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[44].
- Immortal Metaphysical Aspect: Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[45].
- Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[46], along with ignoring the very passage of time[47]. With their souls being completely free from time[48]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[49])
- Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[50])
- Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[51], becoming stronger when it's night time[52])
- Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[53] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[54])
- Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[55]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[56])
- Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos[57], where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[58], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[59])
- Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[60])
- Time Manipulation (1-T, Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[61])
- Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[62]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[63], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[64])
- Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[65]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[66]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[67], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[68], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[69], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[70]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[71]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[72], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[73])
- Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[74])
- Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[75]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[76]).
- Resistance to
- Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[77]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[78])
- Time Manipulation (1-T; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[79], with their souls being completely free from time[80]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[81], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[82]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss-level creatures[83])
- Fate Manipulation (Temporal Fate; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[84], with their souls being completely free from time[85], with fate being a truth wound by time[86])
- Flight (Naturally flies around with its wings and attempts to ram into Simon to attack[96])
- Inorganic Physiology (Is made and formed from gold[97])
- Contact Damage (Pieces of its gold deal damage upon contact[98])
- Splitting (Splits into three smaller bats made of gold when it takes enough damage[99])
- Flight (Naturally flies around due to its wings[100])
- Fusionism (Fuses from many smaller bats into Giant Bat[101])
- Splitting (Splits apart while attacking even if a large parts of the bats are destroyed, it will reform into the same sized Giant Bat[102])
- Fire Manipulation (Can shoot out a fireball from its mouth[103])
- Flight (Naturally flies around due to its wings[104])
- Body Control (Can spin its body fast enough to drill into the ground[105])
- Fusionism (Fuses from all the bats that fill up the view of an entire room[106])
- Splitting (Splits into many smaller bats to avoid attacks[107])
- Fire Manipulation (Can shoot out a fireball from its mouth[108])

- Fusionism (Multiple smaller bats fuse together to form the giant bat[117])
- Fire Manipulation (Shoots out a fireball from his mouth that homes in on the target[118])
- Fusionism (Multiple smaller bats fuse together to form the giant bat[121])
- Flight (Naturally flies around due to its wings[122])

- Electricity Manipulation (Can electrocute the entire floor through slamming into the ground, can form electricity around its body can pull in all nearby bats into an electrical ball where it shoots out bolts of electricity[129])
Equipment
- Bats: Giant Bat is normally made up of a company of bats all merging into one being.
- Gold: Specifically for its Super Castlevania IV self, it is made up of gold and takes form from that.
Notable Techniques
- Fireball: Many of the Giant Bats shoot out fireballs, with many of them homing onto the enemy and tracking them no matter how long they dodge for.
- Strong Winds: The Giant Bat can create a large gust of wind strong enough to push an enemy into a wall, being capable of harming some of the most powerful hunters such as Alucard.
- Splitting: The Giant Bats very commonly split apart into smaller bats, either from taking damage or to dodge enemy attacks. Sometimes it is used to attack enemies too.
- Merging: The Giant Bat is normally the result of multiple smaller bats merging into the giant bat.
- Drill Attack: The Giant Bat tucks its body in and spins at fast speeds, slamming into the ground like a drill.
Other
Standard Tactics:
- Dracula's Curse: The Giant Bat will fly towards the enemy and attempt to ram into them, if attacked, it will split into smaller bats and proceed to keep trying to ram into the opponent.
- The Adventure Rebirth: The Giant Bat is formed from a group of small bats as it flies around and attempts to ram into the opponent, splitting into its smaller bats to avoid attacks.
- Order of Shadows: Both of the bats fly around, sharing a linked bond, they will shoot out fireballs while also trying to dive and ram into the opponent.
- Castlevania (NES): The Giant Bat will fly around and ram into its opponent.
- Super Castlevania IV: The Giant Bat forms from gold and flies around, if the enemy attacks it, pieces of its gold will fly out and hit the enemy, damaging them. It will also attempt to ram into its enemy. When it takes enough damage, it splits into three smaller bats and attempts the same strategy.
- Castlevania Chronicles: Multiple smaller bats form into the Giant Bat and split apart as they attack the enemy while also shooting out a fire breath.
- Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance: An entire room of bats fuse into the Giant Bat, as it flies around, shooting out fire breaths and attempting to spin its body at fast speeds and drill into its opponent. It also splits into smaller bats to avoid attacks.
- Dracula X Games
- Rondo of Blood: Giant Bat will fly around and shoot out fireballs that home in on the target, it will also occasionally turn its wings into a drill and slam into the ground at the opponent.
- Dracula X: Multiple smaller bats fly together to form the Giant Bat, it will proceed to break into the smaller bats and fly in patterns to attack the opponent.
- The Dracula X Chronicles: Giant Bat borrows the multiple smaller bats forming it, along with the tactics from Rondo of Blood.
- Symphony of the Night: Giant Bat will fly around and create massive gusts of wind that pushes the opponent into the wall at the far side, this has been shown effective in harming the likes of Alucard.
- Dawn of Sorrow: The Giant Bat is a large flock of small red bats all working in conjunction to imitate a singular entity's actions. They will spread apart to avoid attacks, form a hand to try and crush the opponent, attempt to ram into the opponent, and shoot out multiple energy rings.
- Grimoire of Souls
- Giant Thunder Bat: The Giant Bat is fused together from smaller bats, it will spin at fast speeds and slam into the ground like a drill, electrocuting the entire ground, it will form electricity around itself as it rams into opponents, and for its ultimate attack it will form itself into an electrical ball that pulls in all nearby bats and start shooting out bolts of electricity.
Weaknesses
- Creature of the Night Weaknesses: Creatures of the night become weaker when exposed to the morning sun[130]. Garlic significantly weakens creatures of the night[131], and causes demons to die if its placed on the ground[132]. If a vital soul is defeated, the grimoire will revert back to its original content[133].
- Unique Weaknesses: Nothing notable.
- Order of Shadows: If one of the Twin Bats takes damage, so does the other one[134].
Note
- Contrary to popular belief, holy attacks and the whips in Castlevania can affect and harm people that aren't apart of the creatures of the night. Leon's doppelganger can use holy water and holy attacks against him in this fight along with the alchemy whip despite Leon being a pure and noble warrior[135]. Simon's doppelganger can harm him with the vampire killer, despite Simon being a noble hero. Holy Water even works and harms enemies such as the "Holy Armor"[136], a knight who has natural holy powers[137]. Corrupted enemies such as Charlie Vincent, use holy water attacks on Carrie and Reinhardt[138]. Characters like Jonathan Morris wear armor like the Holy Mail, an armor that reduces damage from holy attacks[139].
- The Sky Fish feat moving so fast that it appears as a beam of light and only slows once time is stopped[140] is a natural indication of Faster Than Light travel as at the speed of light, time is zero from its perspective. Soma Cruz having a hard time catching up with it initially does not mess with his scaling either as we know it's an unquantifiable level into Faster than Light at the most.
Trivia
- The Giant Bat is the very first boss to appear in any Castlevania game.
- The English instruction booklet of Castlevania confounded and switched the artworks between the Bat enemy and the Phantom Bat boss as they appear in the original Japanese Famicom Disk System version of the game.
- In Castlevania, this monster is called "Zapf Bat". The reason for this name is a mystery, although it could be related to Zapf Dingbats, a type of Wingdings font.
- In Castlevania, this monster is called "Myotia". Myotis are a diverse and widespread genus of bats within the family Vespertilionidae, which are colloquially known as "mouse-eared bats".
- The Myotis myotis is a European species of these types of bats, colloquially known as the "greater mouse-eared bat".
- In Castlevania, this monster is called "Bat Company". This is probably a reference to English rock band Bad Company, which was prominent during the 1970s and early 1980s. This is further supported as many characters from several other classic Konami franchises are also named after famous rock musicians and bands.
- The name could also be a reference to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part IV: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, where the character Keicho Nijimura has a Stand called "Bad Company", which is comprised of multiple military units that act as and are considered to be a single entity. And just like Bad Company, Bat Company is comprised of many small bats working together as a single unit to deal damage and only take damage when they're combined into a single form.
Codex Statistics Questions
Q: Shouldn't the characters be around Tier 2 for defeating the Time Reaper who would've destroyed the very fabric of time[141], attempted to destroy the specific era of time[142], cause all beings everywhere to disappear, forever[143] and that the age was on the verge of collapse[144]?
A: We actually never get a direct outright method of Time Reaper's plan for doing this, from what Aeon mentions to Golem, if the Time Rift is not erased, all beings everywhere will disappear, forever[145], implying that it's the Time Rift causing this, this is further backed up by the fact that in Time Reaper's boss fight, there is a vortex in the background consuming everything[146], meaning this is an overtime feat that scales to no one physically.
Q: Shouldn't they get tier 2 for Dracula's influence destabilizing the flow of time[147]?
A: This is a potent ability but has nothing to do with Attack Potency, there is no quantification for "destabilizing the flow of time", along with this, even if it was taken as physically, then it would be overtime as the effects are not noticeable throughout most of Curse of Darkness. Thus this is merely potent Time Manipulation.
Q: Shouldn't Dracula and by proxy anyone that scales to him get tier 2 for him being able to sustain his castle?
A: This goes under our Stabilization Feats standards, which treats sustaining feats are non-combat applicable Attack Potency normally, though in Dracula's case the Castle is speficially powered by the existence of a Dark Lord, and doesn't necessarily need their strength to rise. In the Castlevania novel, the castle rose without a Dark Lord as an example. Along with this, no one scales to the collapse of the castle, in Curse of Darkness Hector would've died to the collapse of the castle if[148] Julia didn't come save him, and Isaac died within the castle[149]. In other cases the Castle does not collapse[150], but instead slowly fades away[151]. At the end of Dawn of Sorrow Soma Cruz and Alucard (Castlevania) (aka Alucard) must escape the collapsing abyss.
Q: Shouldn't Castlevania characters that scale to Death have Infinite speed due to Death being able to kill distance itself with his attacks?
A: Killing distance to attack is not a speed feat, it's a method of Spatial Manipulation by circumventing and ignoring distance, while one can say the attack spawns on you instantly, this is not really something quantifiable. Along with this, it would only scale to characters comparable to Death during post-Dawn of Sorrow, as Soma notes Death is far faster than he remembered from his fight with him in Dawn of Sorrow[152].

A spectacled vampire hunter confirmed this as his duty.
In front of him is a [grotesque creature] whose dreadful power can be felt. The creature appears human but the instant he looked at it, all of his body’s cells cried out in terror.
“The timing is bad, church person.”
Whilst listening to the words said by the [grotesque creature], the young hunter kept on reminding himself.

- ↑ Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Ever since the Middle Ages, every 100 years, this legendary castle would rise together with its master Count Dracula ----- And whenever it happens, it is said that a clan of vampire hunters will seal it.
Several hundred years have passed with battles with the [dark lord] Dracula.
When suddenly, an end to it all has been foretold. 1999----- Thanks to the power of a clan in Japan, Dracula’s castle was sealed inside a [solar eclipse] to disappear forever.
However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended. Indeed, people have prepared for this but will it still exist? The castle is the symbol of the chaos within humans and as long as people exist, it will not be completely sealed. - ↑ Castlevania: Lament of Innocence Bestiary No. 064
