Background

Son Goku is the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball series. A Saiyan sent to Earth as a baby with the mission to destroy it, Goku became a kind-hearted boy after suffering a head injury and was adopted by Grandpa Gohan. After defeating Kid Buu, Goku works as a radish farmer until he learns about the immensely powerful God of Destruction Beerus and sets out to challenge and surpass him. Along the way, he discovers the existence of multiple universes beyond his own and the incredible fighters that inhabit them.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Son Goku’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Battle of Gods Saga
Some time after Kid Buu's defeat, Goku works as a farmer to earn money at Chi-Chi's request. While plowing the field, Goten arrives with lunch, and Goku tells him to drive the tractor while he eats. After finishing, Goku begins training in Super Saiyan form. During his training in the manga, he imagines fighting Frieza, Cell, and Kid Buu. However, his training distracts Goten, causing him to fall off a mountainside. Goku uses Instant Transmission to save both Goten and the tractor, explaining that he must stay prepared to face foes stronger than Kid Buu.

Later, Mr. Satan visits to offer Goku 100 million zeni as thanks for helping defeat Buu. Goku initially declines, not grasping the amount's value, and suggests giving it to Vegeta. Mr. Satan points out the Briefs family is wealthier than he is. Reminded by Goten that giving the money to Chi-Chi would allow Goku to train with King Kai, Goku accepts. After discussing with Chi-Chi, he travels to King Kai's planet to begin training.

Upon arrival, Goku accidentally causes King Kai to crash into his house. King Kai prepares food and rebuilds his home, although reluctantly. Goku explains he is there to train under ten times Earth's gravity. King Kai acknowledges Goku as an important figure and the most significant of the Kais, but Goku treats him as a friend. Changing into a blue and white tracksuit, Goku starts his training.

While training, Goku overhears a conversation between King Kai, Old Kai, and Kibito Kai about keeping him away from Beerus, the God of Destruction. To distract him, King Kai recalls how he was responsible for Goku's death. Successfully distracted, Goku continues training but realizes he has missed Bulma's birthday party and worries about her reaction. King Kai acts strangely, though Goku does not press further.

Though staying hidden, Beerus arrives seeking Goku. Beerus asks if Goku knows about the Super Saiyan God, which Goku denies. Disappointed, Beerus inquires if Goku defeated Frieza, to which Goku replies it was as a Super Saiyan. Beerus tests Goku's power and doubts he could have beaten Frieza without transforming. Curious, Goku challenges Beerus to a fight, which Beerus accepts.

Goku transforms into Super Saiyan and attacks, but Beerus effortlessly avoids his moves and becomes bored. Surprised, Beerus notes Goku has surpassed limits when he shifts to Super Saiyan 2. The fight continues with Beerus dodging all attacks. Goku requests Beerus to fight back instead of only dodging; Beerus agrees but continues evading. Goku's punches create holes in King Kai's planet.

Goku powers up to Super Saiyan 3 and lands some hits, firing a Kamehameha that Beerus blocks with a finger. Feeling intimidated, Goku attacks again but notices Beerus allowing hits. A final Kamehameha misses and destroys part of King Kai's planet. Beerus then easily defeats Goku and departs for Earth. Injured, Goku reflects on Beerus's comments about the Super Saiyan God and suggests fusing with Vegeta but doubts it will be enough.

King Kai gives Goku a Senzu Bean to heal him. Goku wishes to attend Bulma's birthday party, but King Kai, Gregory, and Bubbles prevent him, so he stays on King Kai's planet.

Following battles between the Z Fighters and Beerus, the God of Destruction decides to destroy Earth. Goku intervenes and requests time to summon the Super Saiyan God. Beerus allows this, and Goku calls upon Shenron, asking if he knows about the Super Saiyan God.

Shenron explains the ritual to create one and then disappears. Goku, Vegeta, Goten, Trunks, and Gohan attempt to transfer their powers to Goku but only increase his strength. Whis notes six righteous Saiyans are needed. Videl then steps forward, announcing her pregnancy. The ritual is retried with her included, and after a lengthy process, Goku becomes a Super Saiyan God.

Super Saiyan God Goku battles Beerus, their fight causing massive destruction across the ocean and city. The battle is close, though Beerus holds a slight advantage. Their fist clash sends shockwaves threatening universal stability. Goku pursues Beerus into the stratosphere, where Beerus states Goku's power is fading. Beerus fires his Sphere of Destruction, but Goku destroys it with a Limitbreaker Kamehameha.

Beerus declares he will spare Earth and reveals other universes exist, mentioning Whis as stronger than him before leaving. Moments later, Beerus returns to tell Goku he is the second strongest fighter he has faced.

Resurrection F Saga
The Resurrection F Saga is largely skipped over in the manga, receiving only a brief summary rather than full adaptation.

Universe 6 Saga
Some time after Beerus's fight, Goku and Vegeta train on Beerus' planet with Whis overseeing their sparring. Their fight is balanced until Vegeta becomes angry and transforms into Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, striking Goku with a ki blast. Goku reminds Vegeta that this form is off-limits, then uses it himself. While struggling with the form's complicated name, Goku asks for a simpler one, and Whis suggests "Super Saiyan Blue." As a punishment for transforming, Whis makes them wear heavy spacesuits.

Champa and Vados arrive, revealing that they are Beerus and Whis' counterparts from Universe 6. Champa challenges Beerus to a five-on-five Tournament of Destroyers to decide control over Universe 7's Earth. Excited by the challenge, Goku accepts.

Whis explains the tournament will follow Tenkaichi Budokai rules and take place five days later on the Nameless Planet. Goku and Vegeta quickly join Beerus' team alongside Piccolo, Buu, and Beerus himself. Vegeta suggests recruiting Gohan for his potential, but Goku says Gohan is busy studying. They return to Earth to ask Bulma to create a new Dragon Radar to find the last Super Dragon Ball.

Testing the new radar near the universe's edge proves difficult. Goku plans to train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber alone, but Vegeta insists on joining. Piccolo declines to train with them. Inside the chamber, Goku wonders about the strength of Universe 6 fighters, and Vegeta reminds him to act his age. Goku misunderstands and comments that Saiyans stay young until age 80. After training for three years (three days outside), Goku and Vegeta emerge with beards.

On tournament day, Whis picks up the fighters in his cube. Goku notices Videl and asks about Gohan, learning he is at a conference. Goku meets Monaka and questions his name. During a word game, Whis mentions "Juri-Juri," confusing Goku, who learns it's a bird from Whis' planet.

Arriving on the Nameless Planet, Goku sees the massive Super Dragon Balls and meets the Universe 6 Supreme Kai and attendant. He recognizes several fighters, including Frieza's lookalike and Magetta. Goku sees Cabba, who reveals he's a Saiyan, surprising Goku and Vegeta. Cabba explains that Saiyans once had tails but lost them through evolution.

Goku takes the tournament exam and barely passes, but Buu fails, leaving the team short a member. Goku blames Vegeta. In his first match, Goku faces Botamo, struggling at first but eventually outmaneuvering and knocking him out of the ring.

Next, Goku faces Frost, greeting him with a handshake. Their fight is intense, with Frost transforming to stronger forms. Goku suspects Frost is hiding more power, so he fights seriously, transforming to Super Saiyan. Despite Goku's strength, Frost lands a hit that disorients him, causing Goku to be knocked out and lose the match.

Chi-Chi checks on Goku, who admits his loss. Frost congratulates Goku, explaining he underestimated him. Before Piccolo's match with Frost, Goku warns him he's outmatched but can at least weaken Frost for Vegeta. When Frost is revealed to be cheating, Beerus notices a poisoned wound on Goku's hand, allowing him to compete again. Beerus decides Monaka will fight last, with Goku going after Vegeta.

After Vegeta loses to Hit, Goku enters the ring against Hit. He initially struggles but adapts, blocking Hit's moves and drawing blood. Hit is annoyed as Goku counters his Time Skip ability. Goku fights evenly in Super Saiyan but tires, while Hit remains calm. When Goku reaches Super Saiyan God, Hit's Time Skip loses effectiveness. Hit powers up, planning to win in one minute using one Time Skip.

Goku uses Super Saiyan Blue at full power to break Hit's Time Skip and lands a strong kick and Kamehameha, though Hit dodges. Hit then surrenders as usual.

Zeno arrives, suggesting another tournament, which Goku finds fun. Champa and Beerus are flustered. Goku and Zeno chat, with Zeno praising Goku's match and calling him funny. After Zeno leaves, Beerus and Champa worry that Goku could destroy all universes. Goku asks Hit for a rematch later. After Beerus uses the Super Dragon Balls to make a wish, Whis transports the fighters back to Earth. Goku asks Beerus for a spar with Monaka, but Beerus declines, telling everyone to rest. Whis drops the Z-Fighters off on Earth.

Future Trunks Saga
Goku, Vegeta, and Whis are already on Earth when Future Trunks arrives. He explains the events in his future timeline, revealing the threat of Goku Black, a ruthless version of Goku who nearly wiped out humanity. Shocked, Goku asks Future Trunks to spar with him to gauge his strength. They start as Super Saiyan 2; impressed, Goku transforms into Super Saiyan 3, but Future Trunks keeps up until Goku briefly taps into Super Saiyan God to overpower him.

While waiting for the Time Machine to be refueled, they pass the time playing a racing video game. Goku is then summoned to Zeno’s palace, where he’s welcomed warmly. Zeno says he wants a friend to play with, and Goku agrees but says he has business first, promising to bring another friend later. Zeno gives Goku a button that can summon or teleport him instantly. Goku returns home.

Back in the future, Future Trunks gives the injured Future Mai a Senzu Bean, leading to a humorous moment when Goku admits he’s never kissed anyone, shocking Vegeta. Goku watches Vegeta gain an upper hand against Goku Black in battle. When Future Zamasu appears, Goku overwhelms him in Super Saiyan Blue form, impaling him with a lamppost. However, Zamasu heals himself, revealing he wished for immortality, then gains the upper hand using telekinesis. Future Trunks uses a Solar Flare to create a distraction, and they hide in a sewer, where Goku plans to use the Evil Containment Wave on Zamasu. Goku and Vegeta then escape in the Time Machine, leaving Trunks behind.

Returning to the future, Goku senses Future Trunks’ energy fading. They find Goku Black and Future Zamasu attacking Future Trunks and Shin, whom Goku teleports to Future Mai, transporting the injured Gowasu. Vegeta goes off to battle Goku Black, while Zamasu confronts Goku, claiming his immortality makes him unbeatable. Goku counters with Super Saiyan Blue and the Evil Containment Wave, trapping Zamasu in a jar. But without the talisman, Zamasu breaks free, vowing destruction. Goku switches to Super Saiyan God to conserve energy.

Zamasu uses the Potara earrings to fuse with Goku Black, forming Fused Zamasu. The fused being overwhelms Goku and Vegeta, knocking them to the ground. Goku powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and attacks, but Fused Zamasu heals from all wounds. Shin suggests fusion, and although Vegeta is reluctant, they eventually fuse into Vegito. The fusion is too powerful for mortals to sustain and ends abruptly. They fall, bombarded by Katchin blocks. Gowasu explains the fusion’s limit.

Fused Zamasu attacks again, but Vegeta intervenes, throwing Goku toward Future Trunks. Trunks heals Goku using a newfound ability he learned from Future Shin, though he can only fully heal one person—Goku, who had mastered Super Saiyan Blue during fusion.

Goku teleports back to battle while Shin teleports Vegeta away. The rematch between Goku and Fused Zamasu begins. Goku powers up to Perfected Super Saiyan Blue, and they fight evenly. Knowing he can’t maintain the form long, Goku charges a final attack, attempting Hakai. Fused Zamasu starts to disintegrate but distracts Goku by holding Future Mai hostage, then interrupts the attack and knocks Goku out.

After Future Trunks seemingly kills Goku Black and Zamasu, Goku goes to congratulate him, but Trunks is struck from behind by a blast from Black. Both villains rise again and fuse anew, attacking Goku. Vegeta blasts them with Gamma Burst Flash, destroying them, but their remains regenerate into multiple Zamasus. Shin teleports Goku and Vegeta to the Time Machine to escape, but they’re pursued by countless Zamasus. Just as defeat seems imminent, Goku uses Zeno’s button to summon Future Zeno. Disgusted by the chaos, Future Zeno erases the timeline, allowing everyone to escape.

Goku returns to the extinct future with Future Trunks and brings Future Zeno to the past, introducing him to the present Zeno, fulfilling his promise. The next day, Goku and the group say goodbye to Future Trunks and Future Mai as they prepare to start new lives in a new timeline created by Trunks’ alterations. Goku believes Future Trunks is strong enough to face any threat.

Universe Survival Saga
With peace restored, Goku returns to farming and takes his harvest to a trader. While leaving in a Capsule Corp. truck, he sees a man whose truck is stuck. Goku offers help but is held at gunpoint by the man and two others demanding the truck. Refusing, Goku quickly knocks out all but one robber, who fires a bullet that scratches him. After defeating the last robber, Goku notices his scratch and thinks he’s getting rusty. He delivers the criminals to the police and receives a large reward.

Goku finds Vegeta and invites him to join him, but Vegeta declines because Bulma is about to give birth. When Whis arrives, he takes Goku to Beerus' planet to train. Eager to face stronger opponents, Goku asks Beerus about the tournament Zeno planned. Zeno’s excitement prompts the Grand Minister to promise Goku details later. Goku returns to Beerus and shares the news.

The Grand Minister announces the Tournament of Power. Future Zeno, unfamiliar with fighting, is introduced to a match featuring all Gods of Destruction. Goku observes Beerus effortlessly dodge attacks, with Whis explaining it’s an automatic reflex. After the match, Future Zeno wants a more thrilling fight, and the Grand Minister selects Top as Goku’s opponent.

Goku begins fighting Top as a Super Saiyan but struggles to land hits. Future Zeno asks to see all Goku’s forms, leading Goku through Super Saiyan 2 and 3. Still struggling, Goku upgrades to Super Saiyan God and the fight becomes more even. At Beerus’ request, Goku transforms into Super Saiyan Blue and attempts to finish Top, but Top dodges and knocks Goku out of the ring, winning the match. The Grand Minister then announces the tournament rules and sends everyone back to their universes to assemble teams.

Back on the Sacred World of the Kai, Beerus scolds Goku despite Goku technically giving Universe 7 a chance to survive, with Shin pointing this out. Goku and company go to Capsule Corp. to recruit fighters.

Goku skips recruiting Gohan, saying he doesn’t like fighting. He convinces Krillin and Android 18 to join. Dende takes Goku to Android 17’s island, where Goku realizes he doesn’t know what 17 looks like. After a fight where Goku uses Super Saiyan 2 and 3, 17 recognizes him and stops attacking. Goku persuades 17 to join by mentioning Krillin, to whom 17 feels indebted.

Whis contacts Goku, who informs him that Buu is asleep and can’t fight. Goku visits Piccolo, who is training Gohan, then recruits Tien Shinhan before returning to Capsule Corp. There, Goku decides to recruit Frieza. Negotiations turn violent, and they arrive looking worse for wear, with Goku admitting Frieza has grown stronger in death. Goku also admits he promised to resurrect Frieza if Universe 7 wins, shocking everyone. Team Universe 7 departs for the Tournament of Power.

Goku talks with Hit, who warns that he has grown stronger. The match begins with Goku targeting Jiren, but the Pride Troopers overwhelm him while Jiren leaves. After Krillin and Tien are eliminated by Frost, Goku protects Master Roshi, who tells him to focus on Jiren.

Goku fights Top and Dyspo in Super Saiyan form. Top warns Dyspo that Goku has more transformations. As Top pins Goku, Goku senses Hit is in danger from Jiren and powers up to Perfected Super Saiyan Blue, breaking free and rushing to help Hit. He charges Jiren, who easily repels him with a single Kiai. Hit says his Time Skip failed against Jiren, and they prepare to fight together.

Jiren stands firm, blocking attacks and taking no damage from Goku’s Kamehameha. He pushes Goku to the arena’s edge, ready to eliminate him. Hit intercepts with a kick, repaying a debt to Goku. Goku praises Hit’s improvement. As the fight continues, Jiren proves nearly invincible. Hit plans a new technique to defeat Jiren but wants to work with Goku. Goku declines, wanting to face Jiren alone. Hit is overwhelmed and eliminated. Jiren finally acknowledges Goku’s name as their battle resumes.

Goku resumes fighting Jiren in Perfected Super Saiyan Blue. Team Universe 7 faces attacks from other fighters. 17 defeats Damom, earning Goku’s praise. Goku briefly joins Gohan and Roshi against three Pride Troopers until Gohan points out Frieza is struggling against Kale. Goku teleports to Frieza and powers up to Perfected Super Saiyan Blue. Despite Frieza’s protests, Goku challenges Kale, gaining an advantage as her power steadily rises. Frieza pushes Goku aside, claiming he can handle Kale. Kale enters a berserk state and fuses with Caulifla, forming Kefla. Gohan intercepts Kefla’s attack on Goku and Jiren, deciding to handle her as Goku returns to fight Jiren.

Goku attempts a combination attack on Jiren, which Jiren blocks and counters with a powerful gut punch, criticizing Goku’s repetitive offense. Aware he faces a formidable barrier, Goku pushes his body to the limit, using Kaio-ken. He lands heavier blows, but Jiren notes Goku made the same mistake as Kale by trying to wield power by damaging his body. Master Roshi advises Goku to conquer his spirit instead of relying solely on strength.

Reflecting on lessons from past masters about efficiency, calmness, and spirit training, Goku learns to let his body act instinctively. Roshi teaches Goku how to move well. Charging at Jiren, Goku dodges a flurry of strikes with graceful moves Whis likens to Ultra Instinct. Roshi is soon eliminated by Jiren, and Goku praises his teaching. Declaring himself Son Goku of the Turtle School, Goku enters Ultra Instinct Sign, dodging Jiren’s attack but then snapping out of it and taking a heavy hit.

Vegeta reaches the Super Saiyan God SS Evolved state but is quickly defeated by Jiren. After teleporting Vegeta to safety, Frieza and Android 17 stall Jiren, with 17 seemingly sacrificing himself in an attempt to defeat Jiren. Jiren approaches the weakened Saiyans as Goku taps into Ultra Instinct Sign again. Jiren powers up, creating an aura for the first time in the tournament.

Jiren intensifies his assault, but Goku avoids major damage. Calm and focused, Goku tells Jiren he has eliminated unnecessary emotions and his heart is calm. Closing his eyes, Goku unlocks Ultra Instinct, landing a powerful punch and dodging an enormous ki wave. He counters with a Kamehameha that pushes Jiren through the arena floor. Enraged, Jiren powers up fully and attacks, but Goku maintains control. The increased power exhausts Goku’s stamina, and Jiren eventually outlasts Ultra Instinct. Vegeta narrowly saves Goku from elimination.

Jiren vows to win and resurrect his master Gicchin. With less than three minutes left, Goku and Vegeta team up in their base forms to fight Jiren using expert teamwork. Jiren powers up again, forcing Goku and Vegeta to combine their energy in a Kamehameha and Gamma Burst Flash. Jiren withstands the attack with minor damage and knocks Vegeta off the stage. Goku is about to be eliminated when Frieza appears with a Death Ball. Goku grabs Jiren, but Jiren overpowers him and throws away the blast. Distracted, Golden Frieza hits Jiren with a Nova Strike, eliminating all three fighters. Android 17 reveals himself, declaring Universe 7 the tournament winners and uses his wish to restore all erased universes.

Broly Saga
Goku and Vegeta fight Super Saiyan Broly in a frozen landscape, both using their Perfected Super Saiyan Blue forms.

Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga
After facing Broly, Goku arrives at Capsule Corporation to train with Vegeta in the Gravity Training Room. During their spar, Vegeta asks about Ultra Instinct, and Goku says he hasn't been able to use it since the Tournament of Power. Vegeta says it’s useless if he can’t use it freely, but Goku vows to keep training. Suddenly, Bulma calls with urgent news: Mr. Satan reported a gang trying to kidnap Buu. Goku teleports there but is knocked out by Merus’ Stun Gun. He wakes up at Galactic Patrol Headquarters, learning about a dangerous criminal named Moro who escaped prison, and that they need the Grand Supreme Kai inside Buu to stop him. Before joining the Galactic Patrol, Goku talks with Merus and Jaco and reveals he and Vegeta had to fuse into Gogeta to defeat Broly.

Goku and Vegeta join the Galactic Patrol as special members and help capture the Macareni gang stealing Blue Aurum on Planet Jung. When searching for Moro, they realize he’s heading to New Namek to gather Dragon Balls. Teleporting there, Vegeta fights Moro first but both Vegeta and Goku are drained and defeated. They’re rescued by Moori and Esca, who care for them for three days. Merus arrives to fight Moro but Moro regains magic thanks to Cranberry’s wish and escapes. Buu fights Moro fiercely, showing increased power, and the Grand Supreme Kai emerges from Buu. Goku teleports them to Moro’s location but Moro retreats into space.

Merus captures Moro but Moro uses his third wish to free prisoners from Galactic Prison, who arrive empowered and attack the heroes. As Moro absorbs their energy, Goku teleports his allies (except Vegeta, who goes his own way) back to headquarters. After some days, Moro grows stronger. Goku tests Merus in sparring but can't land a hit. Merus agrees to train Goku to help him master Ultra Instinct. They move to a planet with a training chamber like the Hyperbolic Time Chamber where time passes faster. Merus reveals he’s holding back his true strength to teach Goku. Training intensifies, but Goku doubts he’s activated Ultra Instinct. Merus explains Goku must be willing to risk death to trigger it.

Two months pass (six in the chamber), and Merus and Goku prepare for a final spar but are interrupted by Whis, who reveals Merus is his younger brother and an Angel. Merus returns to his realm, encouraging Goku to defeat Moro. Alone, Goku pilots a Galactic Patrol ship back to Earth, stopping at a planetoid for directions. On Earth, sensing his friends in trouble, Goku teleports to aid them just as Krillin and Roshi face powerful foes. He swiftly defeats an attacker and reassures Krillin. Goku then rescues Tien, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu from Zauyogi and teleports away to assist others.

As Saganbo overwhelms Gohan and Piccolo, Goku appears unseen and attacks. Moro powers up Saganbo, but Goku, in Super Saiyan Blue, proves stronger. When Saganbo collapses and dies, Goku reveals his new Ultra Instinct Sign form, shocking Moro. The battle intensifies with Goku dodging attacks and firing a Kamehameha through an illusion to hit the real Moro. After a close exchange, Moro briefly overpowers Goku and causes him to drop out of Ultra Instinct Sign. Goku admits his stamina limits him but returns to full power, apologizing to Merus and committing to fight at full strength.

Their auras clash and Goku gains the upper hand, but Moro adapts and pushes Goku to his limits. When Goku nearly collapses, Moro attacks, and the Androids intervene but fail to harm Moro. Vegeta returns using Instant Transmission, surprising Goku, and takes on Moro. Vegeta uses Forced Spirit Fission to release energy Moro stole, but Moro absorbs a new ally, Seven-Three, regains power, and defeats Vegeta twice. Goku, Gohan, and Piccolo prepare to fight. Gohan traps Moro with Galactic Donut, and Goku blasts Moro with Instant Kamehameha, destroying his arm, but Moro regenerates and impales Goku, nearly killing him.

Whis and Merus arrive, teleporting Goku and allies outside Moro’s barrier. Dende heals Goku and informs him an Angel fights Moro. Goku returns to Ultra Instinct Sign but struggles. Merus uses his true Angel power to seal Moro’s copy ability but begins to fade. He urges Goku to protect the galaxy before disappearing. Goku, inspired, enters perfected Ultra Instinct and dominates Moro, landing a powerful blow. After Moro tries various tactics, Goku traps him under rocks and offers to spare his life if he returns to prison. Moro accepts, eats a Senzu Bean, but breaks his promise and attacks, only to be easily defeated. Goku questions Moro about training and expresses disappointment that Moro never trained, saying he could have been stronger.

Jaco urges Goku to finish Moro, but Goku asks if he will return to prison. Moro refuses, regaining his severed arm and merging with Merus’ power to evolve further. The fight moves to the sky, with Moro’s body swelling to contain Angel power. Goku warns Moro his body is unstable and urges him to give up the power before it destroys him. Moro merges with Earth, tying his fate to the planet and threatening galactic destruction.

Beerus prepares to join but is summoned away along with Whis. Whis tells Goku to destroy the crystal like Merus did. Moro sucks the crystal into Earth, but Vegeta uses Spirit Fission to weaken Moro and expose the crystal. Goku tries to finish Moro but is drained. Piccolo, Gohan, and others transfer energy to Goku, who powers up to Super Saiyan Blue but still struggles. Vegeta can’t use Ultra Instinct due to limited Godly Ki. As Moro nears explosion, Gohan and Krillin rush to Goku.

Suddenly, a large ball of Godly Ki appears, coming from Uub, who inherited Godly Ki from Grand Supreme Kai. Vegeta uses Spirit Fission to transfer this power to Goku, who fully restores and ascends to Ultra Instinct. He overpowers Moro, destroys the crystal, and kills Moro.

Goku’s friends congratulate him while Vegeta wonders about the power source. Goku guesses it’s someone special on Earth. Afterwards, Goku celebrates with friends at Mr. Satan’s house and takes Esca home. Days later, Goku, Vegeta, Buu, and Jaco return to Galactic Patrol Headquarters, where they receive medals. Goku reunites joyfully with Merus, now revived as a mortal, and they take a commemorative photo, marking the end of Goku’s time with the Galactic Patrol.

Granolah the Survivor Saga
After some time, Goku and Vegeta return to Beerus’ Planet to continue their training. Goku catches the Oracle Fish for Whis so he can give him vitamins to help with his insomnia. Then, Goku sparrs with Whis, transforming into Perfected Ultra Instinct at will. Despite this power, he still can’t land a hit on Whis, who tells him that reaching Ultra Instinct is just the first step and now he must master control over it. The chance to get stronger excites Goku as he keeps sparring.

While training separately, Goku wonders who will become the strongest in the universe and asks Whis if anyone is stronger than them. When the Oracle Fish wakes, she repeats her prophecy that soon the strongest warrior will appear. Goku and Vegeta ask her for answers, but she refuses, so Goku keeps training.

Whis asks Goku about the main difference between himself and the Angels. After a quick demonstration where Whis taps Goku’s head with his staff, Whis explains Angels are always in Ultra Instinct, while Goku activates it like a transformation. Goku realizes he must learn to stay in Ultra Instinct in his base form, which will remove his stamina drain, and use the transformation only when pushing past limits.

Over the following weeks, Goku improves greatly. When they decide to return to Earth to meet the Heeters, Whis marks Goku’s gi again with his signature. They board the Heeters’ ship and with 18 days until arrival, Goku enjoys the gourmet food.

Upon arriving on Cereal, Goku and Vegeta fly toward the villain, unaware the Heeters tricked them. While flying over a ruined city, they dodge random ki blasts. Goku, using his refined Ultra Instinct, dodges easier and lands, surprised the blasts did not come from the ground. More blasts appear; Goku dodges but gets hit in a vital spot. After using a Senzu Bean, Vegeta scolds Goku for relying too much on Ultra Instinct, and Goku agrees.

Goku transforms into Super Saiyan and spots Granolah, firing an energy blast, but Granolah dodges and teleports behind him. Granolah reveals himself as the “villain” and knows about the Saiyans, shocking Goku. Vegeta doesn’t know about Cerealians. Granolah uses a technique like Hakai, and Goku offers to fight first. Vegeta declines, telling Goku to go ahead.

Granolah asks if Goku can turn Great Ape, but Goku says he can’t anymore. Goku transforms into Super Saiyan God and fights, struggling before combining Ultra Instinct with his form to dodge attacks. Goku gets hit on a weak point and reverts to base. Granolah explains his revenge on Frieza, and Goku questions if he’s truly an enemy. Granolah powers up, and Goku transforms into Super Saiyan Blue, fighting evenly.

Their fight moves to a forest. Granolah swings around a tree to attack, Goku withstands the heavy blows, then releases a powerful ki blast, destroying the area. Granolah notes Goku has combined Ultra Instinct with Perfected Super Saiyan Blue, changing his body’s flow. Goku moves at incredible speed, firing a close-range Kamehameha, but Granolah lands a pressure point hit on his neck.

The dust settles; Granolah is slightly damaged, but Goku is worse, back to base form. Goku believes true Ultra Instinct users have no weak points and that his training is incomplete. Granolah attacks with ground energy, which Goku barely escapes using Instant Transmission. Vegeta tells Goku about the Cerealian genocide by Saiyans under Frieza. They realize Granolah seeks revenge and that the Heeters lied about him. Goku hopes to win and transforms to Perfected Ultra Instinct. Granolah can’t detect his pressure points.

Goku attacks quickly, knocking off Granolah’s goggles and striking him, but Granolah fights back fiercely. Goku’s defense stops most attacks and uses telekinesis to lift and hit Granolah. Vegeta thinks they have won but notices Granolah’s energy is still strong, coming from another place.

Granolah reveals the fighter is a clone made at the battle’s start, splitting his power. Vegeta finds the real Granolah in his ship and warns Goku as the clone disappears. The real Granolah teleports and hits a pressure point over Goku’s heart, briefly stopping it and dropping him from Ultra Instinct. A final blow sends Goku crashing into the forest.

Granolah says he held back for Frieza and that fighting the clone first weakened Goku’s perfect Ultra Instinct over time. He mocks Goku before preparing a finishing blast, interrupted by Vegeta.

Goku wakes in pain from the pressure point attack and watches Vegeta’s fight. He heals himself and jumps in to save Vegeta from a killing blow. Vegeta angrily kicks Goku away, saying they only fought together to protect others and refuses to team up. Granolah charges a pressure point attack at Vegeta, but Goku pushes him away with a Kiai.

Granolah asks how Goku reacted so fast; Goku says he now anticipates the vital point attacks and won’t be caught again. The fight continues; Granolah tries another pressure point move, but Goku moves his pressure points and counters with a punch. Granolah praises Goku’s defense but says his offense isn’t enough to surpass him. Vegeta gets up and watches as Goku drops out of Super Saiyan Blue after a hard hit.

Vegeta takes over, still refusing to team, and tells Goku to leave the fight to him. Granolah overpowers Vegeta and tries a final sacrificial attack. Goku tries to intervene but is blocked. Monaito appears, telling Granolah to stop. The distraction lets Goku knock Granolah down and call them all stupid. Monaito admits lying: one Saiyan escaped Granolah’s vengeance — Bardock, who saved him and Monaito 40 years ago.

Goku is unsure if Bardock is related to him, raised by Gohan, but Vegeta reveals Bardock is Goku’s father. Goku wishes he knew more, and Vegeta comments that kindness runs in Goku’s family. Gas then arrives, now the strongest thanks to Elec’s wish from the dragon. Goku and Vegeta are surprised Cereal had Dragon Balls and that Granolah’s power came from them.

Gas easily defeats Goku and focuses on Granolah, who fights back but is overpowered when Elec removes Gas’s necklace, unlocking Gas’s full power in a wild state. Gas quickly beats Granolah and Vegeta. Goku punches Gas but is blocked. Gas remembers his fight with Bardock and backs off, calming down and gaining a new form.

Gas breaks Granolah’s arms, and Elec fatally shoots him. Vegeta gives Goku his remaining energy. Goku powers up to Perfected Super Saiyan Blue. Gas attacks with weapons and telekinesis, throwing buildings and trains. Goku fights on a train roof; Gas questions Goku’s resolve and whether he is Bardock’s son. Gas throws Goku underwater and counters his attacks. Goku sees Monaito healing Granolah. Gas heads for Monaito, but Goku grabs him and teleports them off Cereal.

They crash on another planet and meet Jaco. Goku mocks Gas’s weaker teleport and tricks him into embarrassing spots. They end up in the Galactic Prison, where villains mock Gas.

On a volcanic planet, Goku appears with Whis and the Oracle Fish, followed by a confused Gas. Goku reveals his plan: using chained Instant Transmissions to leave Gas stranded far from Cereal. Gas asks Whis for directions and speeds toward Cereal.

Goku rejoins the others, including Oatmeel in android mode. On the way to Monaito’s house, Whis warns Gas is arriving soon. Monaito shows Goku Bardock’s Scouter audio, revealing Bardock’s warning 40 years ago to escape with Granolah. This triggers Goku’s memories of his parents sending him away from Planet Vegeta. Goku feels he now understands Saiyan pride but doubts his own strength.

When Gas returns, the Saiyans fight together in Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego forms. Vegeta launches a Sphere of Destruction, but Gas pushes it back. Goku deflects blasts to protect the city. Vegeta orders Goku to back off, saying his Ultra Instinct is unchanged and he must improve quickly.

Goku meditates on a plateau, forming a barrier. Gas defeats Vegeta, but Goku saves him with the barrier and moves him aside. Goku approaches Gas, ready to power up. Gas wonders if Goku will use a known form or something new. Goku reveals he has discovered his best form — True Ultra Instinct. He explains his Sign form uses current emotions, not calmness like Perfected Ultra Instinct.

Gas attacks furiously but loses. Goku finishes with a heavy kick, sending Gas flying. Elec scolds Gas; Goku warns him not to force fights, but Elec insists there will be no next time. Gas bursts with new power, aged but stronger, overwhelming Goku until Granolah arrives.

Goku tries to hold Gas while Granolah powers a final attack. Vegeta joins. Granolah’s attack, aided by Oatmeel, strikes Gas, who falls but is not dead. Granolah tells his siblings to take Gas away and never return. He apologizes to Goku and Vegeta.

After Monaito heals them, Gas suddenly shoots Monaito, who falls. Goku and Vegeta transform to fight again but are outmatched. Gas’s body decays from damage. Frieza arrives, kills Gas and Elec easily, then targets Goku and Vegeta. He reveals he defeated Gas by being in another dimension. Frieza transforms into Black Frieza, defeats Goku and Vegeta easily, then spares them and leaves.

Whis restores Monaito as a favor. He asks Goku and Vegeta to leave immediately since Beerus struggles to make instant yakisoba. Goku invites Granolah to train, but he refuses, wanting to fix Cereal first. Monaito gives Goku Bardock’s scouter before they leave.

Goku asks Whis if the strongest warrior the Oracle Fish mentioned is Frieza. Whis replies it could be him or someone else who has since appeared.

Power Source: Ki (All beings in Dragon Ball[4][5][6] have ki, the very life force energy of all characters[7], ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even[8] block attacks that would otherwise[9] kill them from[10] raising their guard[11], higher level users can lower their own durability to allow people far below them to fatally wound them[12])

Attack Potency: At least Island level (Takes place after the buu saga, where he was so much stronger than before that was unimpressed by Dabura's power, who he compared to Perfect Cell, who is far superior to his Semi-Perfect form, who destroyed several islands with several blast), Higher with Biting (Goku can bite opponents he previously could not harm to do some damage), Far Higher in Super Saiyan Transformations, Even Higher as Super Saiyan God (Fought against Beerus and impresed him enough to where he held off on destroying the earth, [1]), Varies: Skill with Strongest Charged Blast (Charged Blast have one focus all of their energy into one single point[13], putting the blasts power far beyond what their peak strength is[14], allowing them to destroy things they couldn't prior with their regular attacks[15], this also allows them to use charged attacks that can stop enemies far beyond their level, such as Tien Shinhan pushing back Semi-Perfect Cell with his Neo Ki-Ko-Ho[16], along with stopping an attack shot from Buu absorbed Gotenks[17]. Strongest charged blast can gather ki to shoot out blast far beyond what the character is normally capable of[18], with blasts capable of[19] seriously damaging/destroying[20] the Earth along with completely obliterating the opponent[21]. Charged Blast also rely heavily on emotional states for example Gohan not believing in himself[22] was having Cell overpower him in a beam clash[23]. His charged kamehameha stopped Beerus' blast which would've destroyed the earth). Intelligence: Below Average Intelligence socially (Raised in the mountains with his adoptive grandpa before the latter’s death, knows little to nothing about how society functions), At least Below Average, possibly Above Average academics wise (While training with Master Roshi he learned about Math & Calculus, though Goku has displayed he can’t count beyond 18 after being explained to him what comes after 18 he was able to quickly count past it, along with this he has shown to have better understanding academically of situations), Genius Intelligence combat wise (Copies a kamehameha after seeing it once, which is supposed to take 50 years to learn according to Roshi, copied Master Roshi’s ultimate technique the afterimage after seeing it done, could copy Tien’s solar flare and his flying technique and could copy the demon clan’s air ki techniques. Goku is an incredibly skilled fighter to the point that he is able to easily outskill trained Martial Artists such as Krillin and Yamcha and match prodigies such as Tien and even nearly beat his Master, Roshi, after training with him for a few months. Was able to repeatedly adapt to the power of Super Saiyan God, making it take him to new heights and afterwards absorbed the power into him so he could have it's strength even in base form)

Powers and Techniques

All previous abilities to a much greater extent.

Equipment

  • Flying Nimbus: Flying Nimbus is a magical, yellow cloud that serves as a way of transportation. Goku obtains the Nimbus from Master Roshi as compensation for saving Turtle. It served Goku and his sons well throughout Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, by acting as a way for them to fly around at high speeds without using up any energy.
  • Senzu Beans: Senzu Beans are mystical beans with immense rejuvenation properties, being capable of healing entire wounds, such as one's stomach being punctured.
  • Zeno Button: Zeno's Button is a teleportation device that would summon Zeno or Future Zeno to the location the user is at. On the other side there is another button where the user will be transported to Zeno. When Goku came to see Zeno, he invited him to come to Earth sometime, so Zeno gave him a button where Zeno would appear. Later in the Future timeline Goku thought he had another Senzu Bean only for it to turn out that it was Zeno's button. Goku used it to summon Future Zeno in order to erase Infinite Zamasu. Sometime later, Goku thought about reminding Zeno of the upcoming tournament. Beerus, however, was skeptical, even when Goku revealed the alternate button of teleporting himself to Zeno. Threatening to kill Goku, Goku tricked Beerus and teleported himself to Zeno.

Optional Equipment

  • Artificial Saiyan Tail: A prosthetic tail modelled after Goku's Saiyan Tail which Bulma created for Adult Goku to use for fishing in place of his natural tail that was removed by Kami. Used by Goku to catch fish in Kakarot.
  • Power Pole: A red magical staff originally owned by Korin and eventually was inherited by Goku. One of the only heirlooms from his adopted Grandpa Gohan, it became a signature tool for Goku throughout his childhood. Extremely durable and resilient, it is blessed with the unique power to extend and retract to vast lengths at the user's will. Apart from aid in fighting, the Power Pole also serves as the only non-flying means to reach The Lookout.
  • Dragon Balls: Dragon Balls are the titular artifacts of the Dragon Ball series. They are large, crystalline spheres that feature five-pointed stars inside of themselves; individually, they have no powers, but united they have the ability to call forth their associated Eternal Dragon. Originally under Kami, Shenron could only grant one wish. However, under Dende, Shenron can grant three wishes, however since Dende is not powerful enough, Shenron can only fulfill two of the three wishes if a large number of people are revived using one of the wishes. Alternatively, Porunga can grant three wishes, however, Porunga could only bring one person back from the dead per wish as compared to Shenron who can revive an unspecified number per wish. Later, Porunga's power is strengthened by Moori to bring back as many lives as needed without any reduction in the remaining number of wishes.
  • Dragon Radar: An invention of Bulma made to track down Dragon Balls. While Goku and other people can sense the Dragon Balls' energy in a general area, the Dragon Radar can pinpoint their exact location from across the entire planet. This let Goku and his friends track all the Dragon Balls within days rather than years, or hours with teleportation.
  • Potara: Sacred earrings worn by Supreme Kais to symbolize their full elite status as grand overseers of their respective universe. While worn so casually, they have incredible properties. When a matching set is worn between two people on opposite ears, they will immediately be fused into new individual that represents the apex of both people's traits combined. While fusing with a Kai will result in a permanent fusion, any other union will only last for an hour.

Notable Techniques

  • Rock, Scissors 'N' Paper: A technique taught to Goku by Grandpa Gohan which employs one of three attack styles; either a closed-fist assault, a two-finger jabbing assault, or an open-palm thrust assault. It was Goku's signature attack early on during his childhood, soon afterwards being replaced with the Kamehameha.
  • Double Axe Hand: Goku cups his hands together and reels back, then slams his fists on the opponent.
  • Eight-Arm Fist: A physical technique that involves its user moving their arms fast enough that they seemingly have eight of them, allowing them to attack and defend themselves much more efficiently. Used to counter Tien Shinhan's Four Witches Technique.
  • Crazy Fist: A distraction technique used by Goku and designed to confuse and taunt the opponent. Pretending to be a wild uncontrollable dog or monkey, Goku catches his opponent off guard, and eventually knocks him out with a swift kick by jumping from behind. Goku uses this in reaction to Jackie Chun's Drunken Fist.
  • Tornado!: After calling the name of the attack, Goku spins while rushing on the opponent to attack him/her. Used against Nam.
  • Afterimage Technique: Goku creates perfect replica afterimages of himself to give the illusion of him still being in a location making it difficult for the opponent to actually harm his true self.
  • Mid-Air Stop: While falling to the ground, Goku exhales his breath like an explosive blast to stop his decent. Goku uses this technique against King Chappa in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament preliminaries.
  • Tail Helicopter: Goku swings his tail in a circle fast enough to hover and fly freely. Used only once, in his fight against Jackie Chun in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament.
  • Agile Style: After his training under Kami, Goku could remove the Weighted portions Turtle School Uniform to increase his power level and agility due to being no longer incumbered by the heavy weights allowing him to utilize a more agile fighting style hence its name. Goku first used it during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament and later when he confronted his brother Raditz alongside Piccolo. According to Raditz's Scouter, Goku's power level rose from 334 to 416 indicating the weight removal alone increased his power level by 82. This state was named in Dragon Ball Legends (albeit in relation to Piccolo & Pikkon's use of Agile Style) where it is the "base" form used by Goku (DBL22-01S) which represents Goku from the period during which he fought Raditz.
  • Dragonthrow: Goku grabs his opponent's arm, leg, tail, or antenna, then he spins and throws them away.
  • Meteor Combination: First, Goku charges at the opponent and elbows them away. Then, he attacks the opponent with a powerful barrage of kicks and punches, ending with a heavy punch to their stomach. When the opponent lays on the ground paralyzed, Goku jumps up in the air and fires a Super Kamehameha down at the opponent, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
  • Meteor Smash: Goku punches the opponent in the stomach. Then, he punches the opponent away and flies after them to right hook kick them in their face. Finally, Goku axe kicks the side of the opponent's head, knocking them away and inflicting a great deal of damage.
  • Bōjutsu: The art of wielding a staff which Goku utilizes when wielding his Power Pole. Goku learned it from the Power Pole's previous owner, his adoptive Grandpa Gohan. Goku's Bōjutsu skills are so great that he can use his Power Pole to deflect bullets as shown during his assault on Muscle Tower. Additionally, due to the Power Pole's mystical length changing properties, his attack range with the Power Pole is much greater than an average staff.
  • Kaoi-ken Finish: First, Goku charges at the opponent and kicks them up into the air. Then, he flies up after the opponent and double axe-handle punches them down to the ground. Next, he powers up to his Kaio-ken technique as he charges down at the opponent and double-punches them in their back. Finally, Goku quickly lands on the ground and catches the opponent on their back before throwing them onto the ground, inflicting a great deal of damage.
  • Kaoi-Ken Attack: Goku powers up to Kaio-ken x3 as he charges at the opponent and roundhouse kicks them up into the air. Then, he flies up in the air and punches the opponent away. Next, he flies up over the opponent and down behind to double kick them further up into the air. Finally, Goku flies up into the air around the opponent and hook kicks them down into the ground, inflicting a huge amount of damage.
  • Dash Power: Surrounded by an aura of godly ki Goku dashes towards the opponent and delivers a straight arm punch to the opponent.
  • Godly Ki mastery: Goku can change the nature of his ki to that of the gods, increasing his power drastically. With the Godly Ki, Goku gains access to god-level transformations such as the Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue.
  • Regeneration: Super Saiyan God Goku is able to regenerate by pouring his godly ki into his wounds.
  • Energy Nullification: During his battle with Beerus, Goku learned how to nullify the negative damaging effects of their clash.
  • Ki Blast: The most basic energy attack, Goku creates a small form of energy that he blasts at an opponent, usually he uses this to keep his distance from an enemy or to distract them so he can land another attack.
  • Kiai: A technique where Goku affects the air currents around him with ki to produce powerful shockwaves in order to strike the opponent at mid-range.
  • Kamehameha: Goku's signature move since obtaining it. It unleashes a powerful and long-stretching blue energy blast from his cupped hands. Goku first learns the move as a kid after witnessing Master Roshi using it. It can be charged to compete with practically any enemy attack. Since mastering this technique, Goku has continued to improve on it and develop new variations of it.
  • Spirit Bomb: Easily Goku's most powerful techniques and arguably the strongest in the series, it allows Goku to channel ki from all sources of life that he can detect and focus it all into a single energy ball. It was taught to him by King Kai during his training for the upcoming battle against Vegeta and Nappa. Over time, Goku continually learned to expand the range of which he could gather energy, thereby increasing both the size and power of the Spirit Bomb. He reserves this technique as a last-ditch effort for only the most powerful of foes.
  • Instant Transmission: Goku learns this technique on the Planet Yardrat after his battle with Frieza by learning Spirit Control - which also allowed him to sense ki from a much greater distance. This technique allows him to teleport to any location so long as he can find an energy source to home onto. However, it also greatly extends his ability to sense energy. Noticeably in Yo Son Goku, he seemingly improved on the technique as transports to the radish field without sensing anyone, possibly because he had accurate enough knowledge of where it is.
  • Solar Flare: Goku places his hands close to the center of his face with the fingers spread toward his eyes. He then calls out the name of the technique, which provokes a white light to fire out and blind everything watching except him, since he is projecting the light.
  • Evil Containment Wave: A technique learned from Master Roshi to battle Goku Black and Future Zamasu. It binds a target in a swirling stream of green energy before being guided into a container. It also requires a special tag to properly complete the sealing. While normally life-threatening to use, Goku's immense power lets him use this multiple times without even remotely exhausting any of his strength. The benefit of the technique is to defeat enemies they cannot or will not kill.
  • Fusion Dance: A short series of poses that are performed by two characters of equal power levels and roughly equal size. To correctly perform the Fusion, the fuses must strike the poses in a perfectly symmetrical image of one another. The result of a correctly performed Fusion Dance is a superior being whose power is multiplied several-fold over that of the individual fuses.
  • Explosive Power: Goku rapidly switches between the Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue forms in order to utilize Super Saiyan Blue's power to its full potential.
  • God Bind: By channeling the Saiyan God power through the user's hands, the user can use the energy generated to stop an opponent in their tracks.
  • Autonomous Ultra Instinct: The art of automatic self-movement, Goku began learning this from Whis. During the Tournament of Power, Goku unlocked a special state, enabling him to put to usage this skill. While very crude at first and only able to apply it defensively, he ultimately learned to complete this power to defend and attack simultaneously with optimum efficiency. With this power, he is able to instinctively and instantly react to any nearby threat in the most effective way possible. Initially, Goku's usage of this ability was only unlocked subconsciously during dire situations and he was unable to activate it at will after the Tournament of Power.

  • Kaoi-ken: Goku learns this technique while training under King Kai after dying against Raditz. While using it and any of its multipliers, Goku's various capacities and techniques are all proportionally increased. However, the strain of using too high a multiplier and/or for too long can be dangerous and greatly damage his body. As such, he ceased using it after his gaining Super Saiyan. While he can combine the two powers, Goku never tried this while alive as doing so could lead to near-certain death. Later, however, with his Super Saiyan Blue, taking advantage of his divine form's superior energy control and more naturally calm mindedness, he was able to use this technique more regularly.
  • Super Saiyan: Goku achieves this form in a rage after Frieza killed Krillin. In this form, Goku's muscle and height slight increase and his skin turns lighter. His eyes become noticeably sterner and more defined with green eyes. His hair becomes blond and stands with no loose strands. His power also generates a yellow aura. In the anime, when unleashing the full intensity of his power, Goku's aura also produces some slight electrical sparks. Goku's demeanor is greatly affected by this form, making him more aggressive and irritable.
    • Super Saiyan Second Grade: Realizing that the androids' power exceeds a Super Saiyan, Goku entered the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to surpass the basic Super Saiyan form. Ultimately, Goku unlocked this form after weeks of training. However, Goku realized that this form spends too much ki to be maintained. Rather than attempting the more arduous and time-consuming task of refining this form, Goku came to the conclusion that the basic Super Saiyan form is better suited for combat, making a plan to master it and abandon this form completely. As a result of this and discovering more powerful forms, this form is never used again.
    • Super Saiyan Third Grade: Along with Second Grade, Goku achieves this form in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. While vastly stronger than Second Grade, the power output is too intense, causing Goku's muscles to become engorged from the struggle of maintaining this unsteady power boost. This instability drained his ki too fast to be of use for long. It also causes an extreme drop in his speed and agility, tiring him even more and reducing his effectiveness overall. Goku noted that while much stronger than Semi-Perfect Cell, it meant nothing if he could not actually hit his foe with it. This made this form impractical against foes of any real speed. Instead of training to overcome this problem, Goku decides that simply mastering the basic Super Saiyan, feeling that it is the best way to fight and gain power. As such a result, this form is never used again.
    • Mastered Super Saiyan: After realizing the weaknesses inherent to the higher Super Saiyan grades, Goku concluded that mastery over the basic Super Saiyan form would be more beneficial. He used the remainder of his time chamber training learning to maintain Super Saiyan for extended periods. Gradually, he overcame the heightened aggression and uneasiness that accompanies this form to feel as natural as his base form, reducing the energy drain to nothing and increasing his endurance to achieve a max output for this form without drawbacks even in regular life. Ultimately, he is able to enter, maintain, and fight in this form for as long as he desires at its full potential with no loss in efficiency or performance. In the anime, with this mastery, during the Tournament of Power, Goku - having gone well-beyond his limits - was able to flash between base and Super Saiyan to defeat Jiren alongside Frieza despite his battered and exhausted state.
  • Super Saiyan 2: Goku achieved this form at some time after Cell's defeat while in the Other World. In this form, Goku gains some changes; his hair becomes spikier, his forehead has only three bangs over it, making his hair more defined than his other previous Super Saiyan forms. His muscles also become more defined, and his aura also generates electricity surrounding his body, while the aura grows markedly larger and more vibrant. Since gaining greater forms, Goku reserves this form for opponents he takes semi-seriously.
  • Super Saiyan 3: Goku's strongest form in the original manga and anime. Goku achieved this level after years of training in Other World, where he could put unlimited energy into this form. In this form, his hair reaches down to his thighs and his eyebrows vanish completely while making the forehead and eye ridges larger and more prominent. His muscle mass grows noticeable larger more defined while his eyes gain green irises. His aura also becomes rounder with larger electrical sparks. Goku first used this form against Innocent Buu during the Majin Buu Saga, where he had a slight advantage over the Majin. However, this form is extremely draining in terms of energy due to the living world having less energy to siphon. This made him tire fast and even cut Goku's time left on Earth from hours to a mere thirty minutes after using this form for a short time. When attempting to gather enough energy to defeat Kid Buu, he was unable to sustain it as he had not taken into account the strain overcoming his living body, and soon reverted to his base state. Altogether, these heavy disadvantages make it impractical to use this form out of the afterlife and even more while alive.
  • Super Saiyan God: The "Super Saiyan God" is the legend among legends of the warrior race, the Saiyans. The power of six good-hearted Saiyans must be infused for one of them to achieve this legendary form. As Shenron explains to the Dragon Team and company, a Super Saiyan God once appeared on Planet Vegeta to stop the evil Saiyans but he failed because of the form's time limit. The Namekians were aware of the Super Saiyan God and wrote of the method to achieve the form in their book of legends. When in this form, the Saiyan's general appearance has only slight differences: the most notable change is the slight pink skin tone (similar to the usage of Fury) and hair that is a shade of red. In this form, Goku possesses magenta-red hair while Vegeta possesses crimson red hair. The hair retains its natural style but becomes more refined (losing any stray hairs). The Saiyan's eyes become more detailed, and the irises become red (appearing as more relaxed even in battle until sufficiently angered). The overall body structure appears to become younger and thinner in frame and build, though this is not the case for the Future Warrior and Shallot, as their musculature stays the same in their Super Saiyan God forms. The aura of the Super Saiyan God resembles a raging fire. At the time of its debut, Super Saiyan God was "a being that surpasses everything". The power of this form is great enough to allow Goku to compete against the non-fully powered God of Destruction Beerus, who effortlessly defeated Super Saiyan 3 Goku, later the combined effort of Potential Unleashed Gohan (Potential Unleashed Super Saiyan Gohan in the original movie), Good Buu, Piccolo, Android 18, Tien Shinhan, and Gotenks (Super Saiyan in the movie, Super Saiyan 3 in the manga, and base form in the anime), and even a one-on-one assault from a enraged Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta.
  • Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan: Super Saiyan Blue, also known as Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, is an extremely powerful transformation and a transcension of the Super Saiyan God form. By undertaking godly ki training with a deity to wield the power of Super Saiyan God in one's natural state, a Saiyan may achieve a divinity-empowered base form, which allows them to use Super Saiyan Blue as the Super Saiyan version of Super Saiyan God and surpass it in power. While Super Saiyan God can be easily achieved through a specialized ritual, Super Saiyan Blue has no such shortcuts and must be extensively trained in order to be used correctly. In Goku's words, this form is what happens when a "Saiyan with the power of a Super Saiyan God further transforms himself into a Super Saiyan". Simply, it is the first Super Saiyan form combined with the power and godly ki of a Super Saiyan God turned cyan blue, due to a mortal absorbing it. In the manga, Super Saiyan Blue's peak power can only be maintained for a short period, gradually decreasing in stamina from prolong use. Also, repeated use will reduce the power of this form to less than 10% capacity. In the anime the stamina flaw is nowhere near as drastic but is still present and thus Goku learned to instantly and repeatedly switch between his God form and Blue form, allowing him to conserve and more quickly recover the full power of Super Saiyan Blue, letting him fight for much longer periods unhindered. In the manga, Goku almost altogether stopped utilizing the ordinary Super Saiyan Blue form after achieving its perfected state.
    • Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken: Thanks to the Super Saiyan Blue form's great ki and emotional control, Goku can utilize Kaio-ken alongside it with far less risk. In this state, Goku gains a double aura, leaving Goku to appear as a basic Super Saiyan Blue with his blue over while a larger red aura surrounds it. In the manga, during the Tournament of Power, Goku used the same principles of Kaio-ken in order to power up his Perfected Super Saiyan Blue as much as possible in an attempt to overcome his limits. Then the intensity of pushing his power so far beyond his normal limits ultimately causes Goku to produce a jagged aura. Goku utilized this state briefly to battle Jiren - putting up a better fight than previously at the cost of straining his body - though even this power up proved futile against Jiren's overwhelming power.
    • Perfected Super Saiyan Blue: In the manga, as the full potential of a Super Saiyan Blue is only usable for the first few minutes before dropping down, Goku manages to overcome this massive stamina flaw to the point where he can use the form for as long and as many times as he wants. Goku achieved this by sealing the massive overflowing power inside himself, causing his aura to completely disappear. Goku first displays his completed Super Saiyan Blue state against Fused Zamasu, with his power showing a slight advantage over the fused Shinjin, who only survived because of his immortality. This state is not without flaws. First being that this requires intense concentration and focus by the user to prevent any ki from leaking out of their body. Second is that even if the slightest amount of ki, leaking out of the body can be extremely painful for Goku. If it leaks too much, it could cause the power to become unstable and explode, killing Goku.
  • Ultra Instinct Sign: A state first attained during the Tournament of Power. Originally, in the anime, Goku did this by absorbing the energy of the Spirit Bomb as a bolster to break a mental shell in the subconscious to unlock a much deeper portion of his potential. In the manga, this state is the pinnacle of Goku's martial arts training; obtained from reflecting on Master Roshi's words and demonstration of proper movement, admitting to his shame in lack of personal growth and letting go of his self-doubt. With this, Goku's physical and mental parameters are vastly augmented, ranking among the most powerful entities in all the multiverse. His hair stands up somewhat, becoming wilder in shape with no loose strands. His eyes become more defined and sterner in shape, while also gaining silver irises. His aura becomes a complex silver with sparkle appearance. In this state, Goku's physical, mental, and energy parameters are vastly augmented, equally increasing his combat performance. He processes information far quicker and efficiently, letting him learn and adapt to all experiences. The highlight of this lets him automatically react to all threats in the most efficient way possible, even without consciously being aware of it. This augmented growth greatly accelerates his natural improvement, constantly imprinting on his experiences to become stronger, faster, and sharper in his actions with every skirmish. In the anime, entering this state also energize him and negate all previous wounds as a battered Goku showed against Kefla. However, initially usage of this state is random and unstable, only accessible for short periods of time and in the direst of situations. In the anime, by his fight against Kefla, while seemingly learning to access this state more willingly, as noted by Whis, Goku's usage is still incomplete. While his movements have become more refined, he struggles to switch his full attention on to his offense, inhibiting his attacks and techniques, requiring more time to build up energy for an assault to have sufficient power. The effort also appears to drain Goku quicker, returning him to his base form and in an exhausted state.
    • Perfected Ultra Instinct: Once understanding Whis' words behind self-movement, Goku learned to let go of all self-doubt and live in the moment. When fully synchronizing his impulses with his natural drive, Goku can subconsciously unlock the full potential of his offensive and defensive might. This culminates with Goku's silver glow consuming him, turning his hair silver and skin tone more ethereal in nature. The power in this form is vastly greater than his initial state that it completely shreds away his shirt (in the anime). In this state, Goku showed such fine control of his ki, able to calmly repel and contain any energy assault thrown at him. He can unleash barrages of his energy in focused shockwaves and cancel out all but the strongest of attacks. In addition, while accessing this state, Goku's body is full rejuvenated and, in the manga, can grow sturdier in areas in response to being attacked, even causing weaker foes to break their limbs trying to hit his body. In the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, during the battle against Moro on Earth, after witnessing Merus' without hesitation sacrifice his very existence to battle Moro, Goku came to fully appreciate what selflessness is all about. Taking to heart the teachings of Merus and his absolute honor, Goku became able to instantly access Ultra Instinct and deactivate it at will with no apparent drawbacks. In this state, his power is able to affect the entire planet, all while still giving off no energy signature for mortals to sense. After receiving additional power from many fighters on Earth, Goku was able to manifest a giant avatar of himself to grapple with the enlarged Moro.
    • True Ultra Instinct: In the Granolah the Survivor Saga, Goku realized that due to his mindset, at his current mastery of Ultra Instinct he was better suited to Ultra Instinct Sign than Perfected Ultra Instinct, which allowed him to access his unique variant of Ultra Instinct Sign, known as True Ultra Instinct. In this state, Goku is able to put his emotions to work for him and focus less on maintaining a calm mind and heart, which allows him to harness Ultra Instinct to an even higher level than his Perfected form.
    • Giant Form: While in his Perfected Ultra Instinct state, Goku can unleash his energy to form a giant battle avatar to fight with. He used this giant avatar to break free from the Earth-fused Moro's grip and subsequently pin him down so that his main body could deliver the final blow to the planet eater.

Other

Standard Tactics: Goku is a trained and gifted martial artists who has always kept the same tactics when entering battle. Goku will size up his opponent to see where their strengths and weaknesses lay, see how strong they are, and dish out various martial arts attacks and techniques to overwhelm his opponent. Goku will never immedieatly go all out from the start unless he fully needs to and will usually start with warm ups.

Weaknesses

Note

  • Some clips used on the profile come from an anime or movie due to the fact that some abilities from ki use shouldn't function much differently from how they can in canon, along with this sometimes the anime version/video game version of a scene will be used for cleaner visuals. Toriyama himself directly overlooks scenes in the anime and movies and gives Toei the thumbs up[179].
  • The speed scaling for PLs are taken with a grain of salt as there are noticeable times where someone's speed isn't equal to their power, such as Burter being faster then Recoome and Jeice, along with Super Saiyan Grade 3 Trunks having his power greatly increased but his speed decreased.

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: What about the planetary feats in Dragon Ball?

A: Planetary feats are normally done through their strongest charged blast, where they can gather ki to shoot out blast far beyond what the character is normally capable of[180], with blasts capable of[181] seriously damaging/destroying[182] the Earth along with completely obliterating the opponent[183], though they themselves are never capable of leaving this unscathed.

Frieza throws a destroy the planet death ball attack but it doesn't destroy the planet. Goku then interestingly notes the reason the planet didn't blow up is because Frieza was too scared of getting caught in the blast[184] . Vegeta's final flash is noted it's going to destroy the planet and Perfect Cell, who is beyond Vegeta, couldn't tank the blast and had to dodge it last second or it would've killed him[185]. Goku's kamehameha was going to destroy the earth and Cell cannot tank this blast, needing to regenerate[186]. Semi-Perfect Cell explosion was consistently noted it was going to destroy the planet and Gohan and it killed Goku[187]. Ultimate Gohan dies to an attack that destroys the earth, his guard was up too since this was when he was fighting Super Buu[188]. Kid Buu shoots a blast trying to destroy the planet, with Vegeta noting he's going to take himself out with it if he lets it off[189]. In Dragon Ball GT, Great Ape Baby Vegeta shoots a super galick gun that he claims will destroy Earth, when Goku is hit by it, he is knocked out to the point that he can't move for a good while, Elder Kai and Shin later state that Baby is going to shoot another blast that will destroy the planet on, greatly injuring Baby if he's caught in the Blast and will kill everyone on the planet if done[190]. Frieza destroyed the entire earth, killing Vegeta in the process[191]. In the Dragon Ball Super Manga, Gohan tells Goku that he doesn't need to hold anything back and can go all out because anything that happens to the Earth can be restored with Dende and the Dragon Balls. Yet, none of Goku's all out attacks destroy the planet but just heavily causes shockwaves around it[192]. Semi-Perfect Cell unleashes a several blast that destroys several islands Android 16 notes that the attacks are just strong enough to not kill Android 18[193].

In the fight of Trunks vs. Mecha Frieza, who is far stronger than his final form, Mecha Frieza immediately goes for his strongest attack, the Supernova. In the original Z anime King Kai even states this is ten times stronger than the power he used on Namek:

  • DBZ Kai Version[194].
  • Original DBZ Anime Version[195]. The attack is directly noted that it could destroy the planet, but doesn't because Trunks catches it, when Mecha Frieza proceeds to detonate it, the explosion is massive but the planet is still intact, implying Frieza must target the core in order to destroy the planet.
