~ Richter Belmont to Count Dracula

Background

Descending from the legendary and powerful Juste Belmont, the new member of the Belmont Clan, Richter Belmont (the main playable character of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood), grew up in the same peaceful village as he. Richter was trained in combat and was quickly realized to be a prodigious vampire hunter. Once he came of age, Juste passed the Vampire Killer whip onto Richter.

Richter, unlike Juste however, was quite the ladies man; he had several women who flocked over him, and had gotten himself a girlfriend, Annette, who lived in the village of Aljiba. One day, on his way to visit Annette, Richter noticed that the entire village was on fire and being overrun by monsters, and that Annette had been kidnapped.

A century had passed since Simon’s defeat of Dracula, and the Dark Lord was back again; this time, Dracula had kidnapped several women, who he used to lure Richter to him. Making haste, Richter fought his way through Dracula’s Castle, and ran into a young girl related to the Belmont Clan, Maria Renard. Maria insisted on joining Richter despite her age, and the two rescued Annette before making it to Dracula’s chambers.

Dracula thought he was prepared for Richter’s onslaught, but his prodigious powers and magical abilities (likely inherited from Juste) were too much to handle. At last, Dracula was defeated; although, this time, he had a contingency plan. Though Dracula himself may have been killed, his servant, Shaft, remained. Shaft used a dark incantation on Richter, succeeding in possessing the vampire hunter.

Shaft used Richter’s selfish desire of becoming the most famous vampire hunter and inflated it, causing Richter to develop a desire to resurrect Dracula so that he may continue battling him for eternity. Richter became the lord of Dracula’s Castle for the next five years, eventually causing Maria, and the newly-awoken Alucard, to investigate.

Alucard finally made his way to Richter in his chambers, and discovered the truth of his possession. Alucard defeated the Belmont, freeing him of his possession, and traversed ahead to tackle Dracula himself. Richter, left behind to reflect on the past five years, deeply regretted his actions.

Finding Maria and heading home, Richter was ashamed of what he had done, even though he didn’t do so willingly. Feeling as though he shamed his entire bloodline, Richter no longer felt worthy of the Vampire Killer whip, and so he forfeited it to another Clan; the Morris Clan. Richter then continued the Belmont Clan’s blood when he had children with Annette, although he likely lived the rest of his days in shame.

Powers and Techniques

Is a member of the Belmont Bloodline, which gives him:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (The Belmonts are known as the most powerful and renowned vampire hunters within the world of Castlevania[50]. During and before Trevor's time[51], the Belmont's were feared because of their immense power[52]), Acrobatics (Due to Belmonts superhuman nature, they possess very athletic and acrobatic bodies, examples include Richter easily flipping over Death's scythe attack while also jumping around and fighting Death while on a moving horse carriage[53]. Richter also showcases this with his boss fight in Dracula X where he must jump across platforms while also fighting against Dracula[54]. Julius showcasing extreme acrobatic leaps to reach the top of a castle drawbridge[55]), Genius Intelligence (Belmonts are trained and some of the best users of various sub-weapons, which in Castlevania requires one to have a high intelligence to be able to do[56]), Martial Arts (Striking Arts; Trevor left behind all of his fighting techniques to each new Belmont clan member and Morris clan member[57]), Weapon Mastery (No matter the Belmont, they have all showcase a natural gift in using weapons, with Christopher showcasing the tools of his family's destiny are always the axe, dagger, cross, & stop watch[58]. Many of the famous Belmont weapons were left behind by Trevor[59], with him noting them to be the axe, dagger, cross, holy water, and stop watch[60]), Sheer Will (The Belmonts are all ones with strong courage and willpower, where having a strong constitution dictates and influences how fast one can recover from status effects such as poison or curse[61]. Belmonts are pillars of strength, willing to keep fighting even when weakened greatly and having their existence slowly erased from history[62]. Simon claims that the Belmonts and Morrises did not defeat Dracula because of the Vampire Killer, with the reason behind heroes' capacity to fight against evil lying not in their physical strength but the noble desire to drive away evil and usher in all that is good, the desire to protect the world for all of humanity, with the courage to fight to protect others being the true essence of a hero and a Belmont's strength, with this even applying for other heroes such as Shanoa, Maria, Charlotte, and even Arikado[63]. The Belmonts will is far greater than even the likes of the Fernandez/Belnades Clan, including Camilla Fernandez, where its noted she had great spirit and struggled mightily against the curse before she became a vampire[64]), Aura (Belmonts release a glow of aura around them[65], that envelops their body[66]), Non-Standard Interaction (Metaphysical Interaction; Belmonts can interact with ghosts with their whips and sub-weapons[67]. Elemental Interaction; Belmonts can interact with enemies that are the mist itself with their whips and sub-weapons[68]. Belmonts can interact with creatures of the night made of sand[69]. Can interact with creatures of the night made of fire[70]. Can fully disperse and destroy water bubbles instead of the attack just going through it[71]. Blood Interaction; Can harm and kill enemies made of blood[72]. Abstract Interaction; Belmonts can interact with and kill Death[73], where Death is death, being the absolute presence, the awe, the religion, and the dark god[74]. He refers to death itself as him[75]. Noting that he is completely death and human death is only a part of Chaos[76]. Olrox when seeing Death fight serious notes that he senses the overwhelming existence of death and states that death really exists[77]), Nullification (Pain Immunity Nullification; The Belmonts can make the White Dragon visibly react to pain[78] and scream out in pain, where it is an immortal being immune to pain and suffering[79]. Abstract Nullification; The Belmonts can nullify and destroy the scythes from Death, who can use his scythes to kill abstractions such as distance and sound[80]. Death decides who lives and who dies[81]), Immortality Negation (Ageless & Life and Death Immunity; The Belmonts can render immortal skeleton death gods like Death, mortal, having him bleed from attacks, giving him mortality as shown when Death dies to his own scythe cutting off his head and having blood spurt out, something not possible as a skeleton[82]. The Belmonts can kill Death to the point that he requires Mathias to survive in order for him to rise from the dead[83]. Death is a being unconstrained by mortality[84]), Resurrection Bypassing (The Belmonts can kill zombies[85], who are corpses brought back to life from the power of hate[86]), Enhanced Senses (Belmonts such as Trevor could sense the power of a Belmont within Simon and also could tell he did not seem to grasp the fundamentals of combat in Judgment's time rift[87]), Extrasensory Perception (Belmonts can feel others being in an area, such as Simon Belmont being able to feel Trevor Belmont is in the time rift[88]. Leon could sense and feel that Joachim Armster was a vampire[89]. Leon could sense the rage from a Vampire Killer[90]. Trevor could sense a bad omen approaching[91]. Christopher Belmont felt a "chill" upon Dracula's return[92]. Belmonts such as Juste could sense Death's overwhelming power[93]. Belmonts such as Juste could sense the aura of the two different layers of the castles[94]. Belmonts can see beings like the Bitterfly, a mutated insect, visible only to magicians[95]. Julius could sense the dark powers within Soma Cruz[96]. Julius could sense Dracula's powers at work within Graham, though could tell from sensing Graham that he very likely was not Dracula[97]. Julius when fighting Soma could feel the evil spirit within Soma but also Soma's good spirit[98]. Belmonts have the ability to sense the presence of beings physical and spiritual that cannot be seen by ordinary humans[99]), Precognition (Premonitions; Belmonts can have future premonitions through their dreams, such as Christopher dreaming about Dracula stealing his son and turning him evil, far before he even had one[100]), Magic (Due to coming into contact with Rinaldo and gaining the whip, Rinaldo granted him a magic amulet[101]. where Leon gained magical energy that would naturally be passed down to all of his descendants[102]. Belmonts such as Julius naturally have magical powers due to this[103], along with Juste having magical powers deriving from the Fernandez (Belnades) family[104]), Principle Manipulation (Magic comes from alchemy, a field that experiments with the principles of God's creation of the world[105]), Afterimage Creation (Belmonts can envelop themselves in an aura of light that allows them to move so fast, their light projections cannot keep up[106]), Glyph Creation & Portal Creation (The Belmont blood acts as a key to[107] the infinite corridor[108]), Empowerment & Holy Manipulation (Belmonts can amplify weapons, Leon holding The Whip of Alchemy had it become more powerful then before, with Rinaldo stating that the whip fits Leon better than it fits him, despite him being the one to make the Whip of Alchemy[109]. Medusa even noted that it wasn't so powerful before believing the whip gained its complete form[110]. Belmonts can call upon the power of the light and use it to amplify their strength to be stronger and faster[111], this is also shown with Trevor Belmont's ultimate in Castlevania Judgment[112]. The Belmonts can use their stored energy (hearts) and transfer it into subweapons to make regular weapons as strong as they are along with magically enhancing them[113]), Invulnerability (Metaphysical Invulnerability; Belmonts have an inborn self-defense ability known as "Burning Mode" which makes them invincible and raises their status to twice the normal level[114]), Statistics Boost (Belmonts get stronger from hearing of someone's grief, wanting to help them[115]), Reactive Power Level (As Dracula grows stronger each time he revives, the Belmonts have had to keep up, evolving to be powerful even without the strength of the Vampire Killer[116]), Sealing (Metaphysical Sealing; Belmonts can capture the spirits of enemies equal or greater to an area boss and use their abilities from their soul[117]), Nullification (Sealing Nullification; Belmonts such as Julius can completely destroy barriers, however depending on how strong the barrier is, they may have no more energy to fight[118])

Resistances to Extreme Colds (Belmonts can walk in ice cold rooms without much worry[119]), Extreme Heats (Belmonts can travel in boiling hot rooms without much effect[120]. They can also fight enemies such as the Flame Elemental who emerges from the lavas of the room with the whole room being so hot it's colored red[121]. Richter showcases this where he moves around in a burning city without much effect or limitation to his movements[122]), Absorption (Belmonts can fight and take hits from the mist[123], a creature that swallows up the living[124]), Life-Force Absorption (Belmonts can take hits from the Spirit[125], which is an evil spirit that sucks up people's life energy[126]), Corruption (Belmonts can be bitten by vampires without instantly turning[127]), Helfire Attacks (Belmonts can take hits from the Flame Demon, a demon that wields the fires of Hell[128]), Status Effect Inducement, Poison Manipulation, & Curse Manipulation (The Belmonts are all ones with strong courage and willpower, where having a strong constitution dictates and influences how fast one can recover from status effects such as poison or curse[129]), Paralysis Inducement (Belmonts can be paralyzed[130], and slowly recover from the effects of it[131]), Attack Reflection (Belmonts can[132] hit Dracula[133] with different[134] projectile[135] attacks[136], this extends to even Morrises'[137], where Dracula's mere rib bone reflects all projectiles back[138]), Petrification (Belmonts can[139] take hits[140], from Medusa heads[141] who can turn one into stone upon contacting them[142]. Belmonts can[143] can break out of[144], being petrified[145]), Erasure (Metaphysical Erasure; The blood of the Belmont Clan can keep one's spirit from being erased from Dracula's magic[146]), Time Stop (1-T; Belmonts are unaffected by time being stopped[147]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[148], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[149]), Poison Manipulation (Belmonts can take hits from the poison zombie[150], which spews a deadly poison that can rot flesh on contact[151]), Fear Manipulation (Belmonts can be within Dracula's presence along with holding and using Dracula's rib bone where Dracula's mere rib bone is enough to make[152] an ordinary hero feel like a spineless coward[153]), Light Manipulation & Holy Manipulation (Belmonts have a natural resistance to holy elemental attacks[154]), Absolute Zero (Belmonts can take ice from the frost demon[155], a demon that wields absolute cold[156] and a total command of cold[157], making it superior to the likes of Cyril who can wield absolute zero and is seen as a standard ability from a creature of the night[158]), Essence Manipulation (Belmonts can take hits from Succubus[159], who can suck up a person's essence[160]), Sleep Manipulation (Belmonts are able to resist sleep based abilities, such as Leon resisting Walter's attempt to put him to sleep[161]), Death Manipulation & Fate Manipulation (Temporal Fate; Belmonts cannot[162] be killed[163] by the[164] likes of[165] Death and his scythes[166], who is noted to govern the fate of death[167], being noted to have the power to govern the end of all living things[168], and can use his scythes to kill abstractions such as distance and sound[169]), Law Manipulation (Belmonts are unaffected by contracts, where Renon had Reinhardt unknowingly agree to a contract with Satan where if he spends over 30 thousand gold pieces, his soul is forfeit, with Reinhardt being able to kill Renon and negate the contract altogether[170], where contracts are made to be absolute and bind one to it's agreements[171])

Equipment

Whips

  • Vampire Killer: The complete form of the Whip of Alchemy, infused with the soul of Sara Trantoul. It can slay anything related to the vampires. This whip would be passed down to the rest of the Belmont Clan, and used to slay Dracula countless times.
  • Flame Whip: This is a powered up version of the Vampire Killer (Morning Star) Whip, which is given the elemental attribute of fire.

Sub-Weapons

  • Dagger: A collection of throwing daggers in Richter’s possession, which can be thrown at enemies at high speeds.
  • Axe: An axe made with silver, which Richter uses to throw at his enemies.
  • Cross: This cross works as the ultimate repellant for dark creatures, destroying all that are within Richter’s vicinity.
  • Pocket Watch: A watch that allows Richter to stop time for a brief moment, although it is costly in hearts for him to use.
  • Holy Water: A jar of holy water that erupts into flames once it is released out of its container.
  • Magic Water: A sacred book blessed by the church, which surrounds Richter and deals holy damage.
  • Invincibility Potion: This potion makes Richter invulnerable for a short period of time.

Notable Techniques

Item Crashes

Item Crashes are a technique utilized by Richter that allow him to use special attacks with his sub-weapons. Performing an item crash takes more hearts then normally taken from the subweapon however in return the attack is capable of killing most enemies and greatly reducing a boss' health.

The item crashes are as follow:

Flame Whip

Richter levitates in the air, gaining fire powers into his body, then swings a longer, wider version of his whip, covered with flames. It lasts only for one attack. In Symphony of the Night Richter swings his arms, accumulating energy into his body and, for about 35 seconds, his Vampire Killer whip is enveloped in flames when he attacks (his body flashes red-orange during this time period).

Thousand Edge

Richter throws a barrage of knives forward. Very useful against some standing bosses.

Spiral Axe

Richter levitates in the air while axes rotate around him in a circle. The axes then fly out, damaging all enemies on screen.

Holy Cross (Boomerang)

Richter accumulates energy, then he levitates in the air, covered with a large light beam, and giant crosses are summoned, from the floor to the air, to revolve around the beam which then spreads out dealing damage to all enemies on the screen. A myriad of cross boomerangs will hurl through the air at various angles, damaging most things on the screen.

Hydro Storm

Richter levitates in the air and a rain of holy water is summoned all over the screen, dealing damage to enemies and great damage to bosses. The rain will last a few seconds.

Grand Cross

Richter levitates in the air and a giant crucifix is shown in the center of the screen, then it will fly upward, covering all the screen with its attack, before it vanishes.

Magic Book

Richter throws a circle of Bible pages, which continuously spins and goes forward, damaging enemies in front of him. Other versions have the books circle around and form a glyph that shoots out a massive energy beam.

Pocket Watch

Richter summons twelve stars, with the same position of the twelve numbers of a clock, damaging all enemies near them. Has a very high heart cost. In Dracula X, a set of orbs will revolve around Richter while time is slowed and then burn up when time is up. In Symphony of the Night, Richter summons four clocks that do the same thing as the normal Stopwatch. When they end their countdown, each clock will fire a bolt of lightning straight ahead as they vanish.

Lightning Bolt

Richter points to the sky and lightning spreads out from his finger, damaging all enemies on-screen.

Vibhuti

Richter points toward the sky and, from his finger, a cloudy eruption of white ashes damages anything unfortunate enough to be caught there.

Rebound Stone

Richter points to the sky and, from his finger, numerous stones are sent upward, damaging enemies above him. Once about 8 stones are accumulated in the same place, a flash will fill the screen, damaging all enemies.

Key

Richter levitates in the air holding out the key, but nothing happens. He is still invincible during this time, though, and the key will damage enemies that touch it.

Other

Standard Tactics

  • Regular: Richter will use his families whip along with various sub-weapons and item crashes that best suit the situation.
  • Mind Controlled Richter acts much like Dracula, where he will not directly attack and instead have one travel through the entire castle and reach him at the throne room. If one reaches him, he will fight them and utilize the same tactics as his regular self.

Weaknesses

Note

Trivia

  • Richter's given name is a German word, which literally means "judge" when translated.
  • Richter was given his name by composer Akira Sōji (Akiropito), who named him after his favorite conductor, Karl Richter[472].
  • The original Rondo of Blood version of Richter closely resembles Ryu from the Street Fighter series by Capcom. This design was not reused in his following appearances in Symphony of the Night nor in The Dracula X Chronicles.
    • Richter returned with his original design once more in the 2018 crossover fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, alongside Street Fighter's Ryu.
  • Richter can be seeing wielding a white leather whip in some of the earliest strategy guides for Rondo of Blood; however, Richter has never used a leather whip in any of his appearances (except for the opening cutscene of Dracula X).
  • When Richter is encountered in the Colosseum area of Symphony of the Night, he says: "Open, Hell's Gate! Come forth, my servants! Crush this flea who invades my castle!", which foreshadows who was controlling him.
    • Coincidentally, Kiyoyuki Yanada, Richter's Japanese voice, also dubbed Shaft in the same game.
  • Both of Richter's English and Japanese voice actors from the original PlayStation version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night have already passed away, Scott McCulloch and Kiyoyuki Yanada, respectively.
  • It is possible to see a fingernail painted over one glove in one of Richter's artworks for Symphony of the Night, which may imply that his original redesign didn't have gloves in the first place.
  • The theme song "Chapel of Dissonance" from Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, is Richter's theme song "Opposing Bloodlines" slowed down, giving the reference to the upcoming birth of himself even from his ancestor's game.
  • Richter's English voice actor in The Dracula X Chronicles (and onward), David Vincent, also provided the voice of Wind/Eric Lecarde in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.
  • Richter is one of the three character to be the main character in an alternate character mode in more than one game. The other two are Maria Renard and Julius Belmont.

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: Shouldn't the characters be around tier 2 for defeating the Time Reaper who would've destroyed the very fabric of time[473], attempted to destroy the specific era of time[474], cause all beings everywhere to disappear, forever[475] and that the age was on the verge of collapse[476]?

A: We actually never get a direct outright method of Time Reaper's plan for doing this, from what Aeon mentions to Golem, if the Time Rift is not erased, all beings everywhere will disappear, forever[477], implying that it's the Time Rift causing this, this is further backed up by the fact that in Time Reaper's boss fight, there is a vortex in the background consuming everything[478], meaning this is an overtime feat that scales to no one physically.

Q: Shouldn't they get tier 2 for Dracula's influence destabilizing the flow of time[479]?

A: This is a potent ability but has nothing to do with Attack Potency, there is no quantification for "destabilizing the flow of time", along with this, even if it was taken as physically, then it would be overtime as the effects are not noticeable throughout most of Curse of Darkness.

Q: Shouldn't Dracula and by proxy anyone that scales to him get tier 2 for him being able to sustain his castle?

A: This goes under our Stabilization Feats standards, which treats sustaining feats are non-combat applicable Attack Potency normally, though in Dracula's case the Castle is speficially powered by the existence of a Dark Lord, and doesn't necessarily need their strength to rise. In the Castlevania novel, the castle rose without a Dark Lord as an example. Along with this, no one scales to the collapse of the castle, in Curse of Darkness Hector would've died to the collapse of the castle if[480] Julia didn't come save him, and Isaac died within the castle[481]. In other cases the Castle does not collapse[482], but instead slowly fades away[483]. At the end of Dawn of Sorrow Soma Cruz and Genya Arikado (aka Alucard must escape the collapsing abyss.

Q: Shouldn't Castlevania characters that scale to Death have Infinite speed due to Death being able to kill distance itself with his attacks?

A: Killing distance to attack is not a speed feat, it's a method of Spatial Manipulation by circumventing and ignoring distance, while one can say the attack spawns on you instantly, this is not really something quantifiable. Along with this, it would only scale to characters comparable to Death during post-Dawn of Sorrow, as Soma notes Death is far faster than he remembered from his fight with him in Dawn of Sorrow[484].

“What have you misunderstood? I am Death. Human death only comprises a part of chaos. They can come back again as zombies or skeletons, but without a soul, dead bodies cannot be revived. And ----- there is no reason to perform that.”
  77. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Those scythes constructed by magic did not turn towards Olrox or Michelle, every scythe then gathered near the youth’s body.
Then, those numerous blades made from magic overlapped with each other and with a powerful atrocious magic constructed a Death scythe in Death’s arm.
“This false castle……You shall fall into chaos as a thing that denies the existence of the [lord]……[death] shall pass judgment on your sins!”
Sensing the overwhelming existence of [death], Olrox again realized that the youth in front of him is [Death]------laughed out loud.
“interesting…… So, death really exists! Thus I’ll use all my power…… to shatter that thing called [death].”

“…… If so, why did you take power away from the crack in the eclipse’s seal? If you just intend to imitate like a monkey, isn’t your own power enough?”
Those were the emotionless words of Death.
In response, Olrox laughed his bold answer.
“As I’ve said, I would equally gain control over the human world and the source of Dracula’s power, chaos. I do not intend to obey someone else’s mind aside from my own. That includes you who were born out of chaos.”
    “……”
“You should be glad though to know yourself. Just by stealing power, my shameful monotonous time is over…… Even before Alucard appeared, just because I showed up and declared war on him.”
Olrox’s voice was mixed with a tinge of thin delight. He respectfully bowed to Death who completely killed his emotions.
“I would end the reincarnation cycle of this demon castle. I who understood and was spun out of the stains of chaos, swear to rob that power with my hands. Now, yield.”
With Death’s reply, an explosive murderous intent rose.
Two bronze colored scythes much larger than usual appeared; it advanced to the space in between the two men with an intention to cut off Olrox’s head.
    Kill the distance-----
    Kill the sound-----
    Just, faster, soon, die.
It can be seen that the blades have certainly caught Olrox’s neck, but----- that is only an after image and the vampire is already at Death’s back.
    “……die.”
That was said by the enemy who called on his servants.
From the surrounding space, a group of purple bats rose, passed by Olrox’s arm with the speed of a bullet, attacking Death. However, Death did not show any gesture of avoiding them. He simply faced Olrox and sprayed out numerous scythes.

    “Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
    However-----
    Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul."

Several hundred years have passed with battles with the [dark lord] Dracula.
When suddenly, an end to it all has been foretold. 1999----- Thanks to the power of a clan in Japan, Dracula’s castle was sealed inside a [solar eclipse] to disappear forever.
However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended. Indeed, people have prepared for this but will it still exist? The castle is the symbol of the chaos within humans and as long as people exist, it will not be completely sealed.

That really is no doubt an obsession.
The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.

It was a whip that was soaked in blood in some places.
“I picked this up at the garden and I believe this is yours, right? Old man Julius also uses a whip. I came here just to deliver this to ya.”
Whoosh, receiving the thrown whip, Michelle noticed that it was the magical whip that serves as Curtis’ weapon.
“That’s great……! Curtis! With this your power-----“
In order to shake away the confusion she had a while ago, Michelle raised her voice, but-----
“Sorry, but…… with my current self, I could not handle it.”
“……? What are you talking about? Curtis……”
was he still confused, Michelle made him grip his whip.
Snap, some kind of popping sound rang and Michelle felt a light shock in her arm.
    “Uh……!?”
What happened, she directed her eyes on the origin of the shock-----
A part of the whip’s handle had a rotten like disintegration-----
A part of Curtis’ hand was burned, and that skin immediately returned back to as before.
    ----- No way……
    “Curtis……?”
“……I am currently weak at holy magic.”
    “Eh……”"

  420. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku Novel “I had said it before. I do not intend to bind the world with chaos.”
The bats and scythes cancelled each other out and the entire dance hall sparkled with blood."
