Doppelganger (Castlevania)
From The Codex
Background
The Doppelganger is a recurring boss in the Castlevania series. This demon assumes the form of another being, often mimicking its victims. The concept of a doppelgänger originates from Egyptian mythology, where it is believed that encountering one's doppelgänger signifies the intent to kill the original and assume their role in life.
This dropdown contains the synopsis of Doppelganger’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise! |

Powers and Techniques
Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:
Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[9], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[10]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[11]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[12]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[13]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[14]. With their souls being completely free from time[15]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[16]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[17]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[18], becoming stronger when it's night time[19]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[20] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[21]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[22]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[23]), Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos[24], where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[25], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[26]), Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[27]), Time Manipulation (1-T, Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[28]), Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[29]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[30], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[31]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[32]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[33]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[34], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[35], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[36], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[37]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[38]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[39], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[40]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[41]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[42]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[43]).

Notable Techniques
- Form Mimicry: The Doppelganger is a demon who assumes the form of its intended victims before killing them[1385], gaining all of their strengths, Weaknesses, abilities and resistances.
Other
Standard Tactics: The Doppelganger will assume the form of the character it takes and copy their tactics.
Weaknesses
- Creature of the Night Weaknesses: Creatures of the night become weaker when exposed to the morning sun[1386]. Garlic significantly weakens creatures of the night[1387], and causes demons to die if its placed on the ground[1388]. If a vital soul is defeated, the grimoire will revert back to its original content[1389].
- Standard Vampire Weaknesses: After a vampire is sufficiently weakened, the sunlight can kill them[1390]. Otherwise Vampires can stand out in the sunlight just fine[1391]. Though some weaker vampires can have the sun burn them overtime, killing them[1392]. Oak Stakes are able to break through the magic of a weakened vampire[1393]. Defeating a vampire will stop the effects of someone they have bitten, but only before they've turned[1394]. This is shown in Harmony of Dissonance where through Juste killing Dracula's Wraith, the bite marks on Lydie have vanished[1395]. Vampires reflections do not appear on mirrors, making them easier to identify[1396]. Vampires are noted to be weak during the dawn[1397].
- Unique Weaknesses: The form it takes will have the weaknesses of the character.
Note
- Contrary to popular belief, holy attacks and the whips in Castlevania can affect and harm people that aren't apart of the creatures of the night. Leon's doppelganger can use holy water and holy attacks against him in this fight along with the alchemy whip despite Leon being a pure and noble warrior[1398]. Simon's doppelganger can harm him with the vampire killer, despite Simon being a noble hero. Holy Water even works and harms enemies such as the "Holy Armor"[1399], a knight who has natural holy powers[1400]. Corrupted enemies such as Charlie Vincent, use holy water attacks on Carrie and Reinhardt[1401]. Characters like Jonathan Morris wear armor like the Holy Mail, an armor that reduces damage from holy attacks[1402].
Trivia
- The Trevor Belmont Doppelganger in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse will throw a red version of the Banshee Boomerang. However, in the Japanese version of the game, it throws the regular Banshee Boomerang that Trevor uses.
- Besides the two Doppelganger boss fights that take place in Symphony of the Night, the player also faces yet another boss battle midway through the Reverse Colosseum where they must fight fake versions of Trevor, Sypha and Grant. However, unlike the Doppelganger, who is a creature that can take the form of other living beings, these actually are a trio of zombies impersonating those characters.
- In Symphony of the Night, if Doppelganger40 is defeated before Doppelganger10 (commonly done in Richter Mode or Maria Mode, or via sequence breaking), the latter will not appear[1403]. This implies both are the same Doppelganger, Doppelganger40 being a leveled-up version of himself, similar to how Alucard himself can level up (as hinted by the "LV" in the Doppelganger's Japanese name).
- However, if this is done, the Doppelganger10's Life Max up will be unobtainable.
- The rotating circular gate in the Outer Wall from where Doppelganger10 comes out in Symphony of the Night is a replica of the Aztec sun stone, mainly differing on their central parts, where the original slab has the face of an Aztec solar deity.
- Doppelganger40 is fought at the Reverse Caverns, the castle opposite of the normal castle. It is possible the portal took the Doppelganger to the Reverse Castle after his first defeat. Similar portals are seen in Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, transporting characters between Castle A and Castle B.
- Doppelganger10's boss fight only triggers when entering the room from the left side. Entering the room from the right (via sequence breaking) will not load the boss.
- Shadow, a boss which appears in Harmony of Dissonance, is basically another type of doppelganger. However, instead of copying and adopting the form of the protagonist, it takes the form of a Black Panther, a Moth and an Evil Sword. It also shares the trait that its transform ability goes out of control upon defeat.

- ↑ WN: Last question. Why does Dracula keep putting meat inside the walls of his castle?
KI: You should ask, why do they eat it! I've thought about this stuff.
I've actually thought about the candles. The candles are people's souls that were taken by Death or by the vampires. In Japan there are candles that represent life. So, when you release the souls from the candles by whipping them, they give you a "thank you" present. Thank-you hearts, or thank-you holy water.
The meat, I have no idea. - ↑ Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls Prologue Stage 4

“…… If so, why did you take power away from the crack in the eclipse’s seal? If you just intend to imitate like a monkey, isn’t your own power enough?”
Those were the emotionless words of Death.
In response, Olrox laughed his bold answer.
“As I’ve said, I would equally gain control over the human world and the source of Dracula’s power, chaos. I do not intend to obey someone else’s mind aside from my own. That includes you who were born out of chaos.”
“……”
“You should be glad though to know yourself. Just by stealing power, my shameful monotonous time is over…… Even before Alucard appeared, just because I showed up and declared war on him.”
Olrox’s voice was mixed with a tinge of thin delight. He respectfully bowed to Death who completely killed his emotions.
“I would end the reincarnation cycle of this demon castle. I who understood and was spun out of the stains of chaos, swear to rob that power with my hands. Now, yield.”
With Death’s reply, an explosive murderous intent rose.
Two bronze colored scythes much larger than usual appeared; it advanced to the space in between the two men with an intention to cut off Olrox’s head.
Kill the distance-----
Kill the sound-----
Just, faster, soon, die.
It can be seen that the blades have certainly caught Olrox’s neck, but----- that is only an after image and the vampire is already at Death’s back.
“……die.”
That was said by the enemy who called on his servants.
From the surrounding space, a group of purple bats rose, passed by Olrox’s arm with the speed of a bullet, attacking Death. However, Death did not show any gesture of avoiding them. He simply faced Olrox and sprayed out numerous scythes.

And ----- there is no reason to perform that.” - ↑ Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Those scythes constructed by magic did not turn towards Olrox or Michelle, every scythe then gathered near the youth’s body.
Then, those numerous blades made from magic overlapped with each other and with a powerful atrocious magic constructed a Death scythe in Death’s arm.
“This false castle……You shall fall into chaos as a thing that denies the existence of the [lord]……[death] shall pass judgment on your sins!”
Sensing the overwhelming existence of [death], Olrox again realized that the youth in front of him is [Death]------laughed out loud.

It was a whip that was soaked in blood in some places.
“I picked this up at the garden and I believe this is yours, right? Old man Julius also uses a whip. I came here just to deliver this to ya.”
Whoosh, receiving the thrown whip, Michelle noticed that it was the magical whip that serves as Curtis’ weapon.
“That’s great……! Curtis! With this your power-----“
In order to shake away the confusion she had a while ago, Michelle raised her voice, but-----
“Sorry, but…… with my current self, I could not handle it.”
“……? What are you talking about? Curtis……”
was he still confused, Michelle made him grip his whip.
Snap, some kind of popping sound rang and Michelle felt a light shock in her arm.
“Uh……!?”
What happened, she directed her eyes on the origin of the shock-----
A part of the whip’s handle had a rotten like disintegration-----
A part of Curtis’ hand was burned, and that skin immediately returned back to as before.
----- No way……
