"Mature Content"
This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.

Background

The Doppelganger is a recurring boss in the Castlevania series. This demon assumes the form of another being, often mimicking its victims. The concept of a doppelgänger originates from Egyptian mythology, where it is believed that encountering one's doppelgänger signifies the intent to kill the original and assume their role in life.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Doppelganger’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
The Doppelganger first appears in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, encountered at the end of the villa stage. Initially, it appears in an amorphous, blob-like state before transforming into the character the player is controlling (Trevor, Sypha, Grant, or Alucard). During the battle, the Doppelganger relentlessly pursues the player, constantly attacking. If the player switches characters, the Doppelganger will also change to mimic the new character. This provides strategic opportunities, such as repositioning during its morphing animation or choosing a more manageable form to fight against.

The Doppelganger mirrors the main weapon and level of the character it is imitating. It wields the Banshee Boomerang as Trevor, the Axe as Grant, and Flames as Sypha.

To defeat the Doppelganger, bring Holy Water if playing as Trevor or use the Lightning Bolt spell if playing as Sypha. Upon its defeat, the Doppelganger loses control of its transforming ability, rapidly cycling through all its forms before being destroyed.

Castlevania Chronicles
The Doppelganger appears as Simon's reflection in a mirror, breaking free to attack. It relentlessly pursues the player, mirroring Simon's equipped whip (Mysterious Whip, Chain Whip, or Morning Star Whip) and sub-weapon (Dagger, Holy Water, Axe, or Boomerang, excluding the Pocket Watch and Herb). Notably, when the Doppelganger uses a sub-weapon, it depletes the player's heart supply by one. Upon defeat, it releases a barrage of mirror shards while struggling before being destroyed.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
In Symphony of the Night, the Doppelganger is misspelled as "Doppelganger," a mistake that persists in later versions of the game.

The Doppelganger appears twice in the game, each time taking the form of Alucard. Doppelganger10 is encountered early on as the second boss (third if counting Dracula from the prologue). It uses a Short Sword (9 ATT, Cut) and the Dagger sub-weapon (6 ATT, Holy). It can transform into mist or bat forms (15 ATT, Hit) before Alucard gains access to these abilities. Despite its abilities, it is highly vulnerable to status effects such as Curse, which can render its sword attack unusable temporarily. A shield can block its Dagger sub-weapon.

Doppelganger40 is a stronger version found in the Reverse Caverns as an optional boss. This variant retains all the abilities of Doppelganger10, including Wing Smash (55 ATT, Hit), and gains access to additional equipment like the Gravity Boots and Leap Stone. It also uses the Rebound Stone sub-weapon (12 ATT, Holy), Terminus Est (35 ATT, Cut + Poison), and Stone Sword (5 ATT, Stone), though the latter is infrequently used. The effects of its Poison and Stone attacks can be mitigated with items like the Topaz Circlet, Medusa Shield, or Mirror Cuirass. Doppelganger40 is also vulnerable to these statuses, allowing players to exploit this weakness using the same equipment or weapons.

Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
The Doppelganger appears as a mid-boss in Lament of Innocence and is referred to as "Leon Fake" in Joachim Mode and Pumpkin Mode. It is encountered twice during the game, each time with distinct abilities and tactics.

The first encounter takes place in the Dark Palace of Waterfalls. Here, the Doppelganger mimics Leon Belmont's abilities, including a copy of the Whip of Alchemy. Its attacks include a quick step, a three-attack or seven-attack whip combo, a flaming leap charge, unholy water attacks aimed at Leon or its own feet, and a replica of Leon's Cross Blazer technique (Holy Water + Purple Orb), which creates a cross-shaped flame. In Normal Mode, it retreats into the sewers after being defeated. In Crazy Mode, Leon must face two Doppelgangers simultaneously, both using the same move set.

The second encounter occurs in the Pagoda of the Misty Moon. The Doppelganger appears with a red palette swap and increased health. This version abandons the Whip of Alchemy in favor of flaming fist attacks. While it retains its quick-step ability, flaming leap charge, and unholy water-based attacks, it replaces its whip attacks with melee strikes, including a downward kick, a fast two-hit punch combo, a single punch, and a three-hit punch combo.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
The Doppelganger appears as the final boss of the Nest of Evil in Portrait of Ruin. Its form is randomized, taking on the appearance of either Jonathan or Charlotte, regardless of which character the player is controlling. When playing in alternate modes, the Doppelganger mimics the protagonist specific to that mode.

The Doppelganger mirrors the player’s equipment and abilities upon entering the battle, though it does not use mastered skills. In Sisters Mode, the Doppelganger takes the form of Stella and Loretta, mirroring their boss mechanics from the main game. In Old Axe Armor Mode, it mimics the player’s Old Axe Armor form rather than the standard enemy variant.

Upon defeat, the Doppelganger drops a Magic Crystal, the only boss in the Nest of Evil to do so. Following its defeat in the Normal campaign, players can proceed to claim the Greatest Five Dual Crush, the game's most powerful Dual Crush.

Powers and Techniques

Is a Creature of the Night, which gives:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Even the smallest creatures of the night can destroy a bridge[9], one of Dracula's bats easily destroyed a stone ground block[10]), Intimidation (Creatures of the nights appearances can cause one to have their body's cells cry out in terror[11]), Immortality (Ageless; The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[12]. Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Creatures of the Night can continue to exist even as a spirit and use their spirit form to form bodies out of inanimate material around them[13]), Acausality (Causality Immunity; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[14]. With their souls being completely free from time[15]. The biggest hindrance to humans when attempting to accomplish something is their limited lifespans, a limitation that cannot be overcome, however, dwellers of the darkness do not apply to the laws of the human world, ignoring such limitations[16]), Free Will (Creatures of the Night do not follow the hand of God and instead choose of their own free will[17]), Empowerment (Creatures of the night are empowered by the night[18], becoming stronger when it's night time[19]), Evolution (Creatures of chaos can inherit evil natures[20] awakening into stronger enemies with new abilities and less weaknesses[21]), Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Creatures of chaos can be brought back to life from the power of hate[22]. This has also been shown with slain heads reviving as an angry wraith[23]), Regeneration (Mid-Godly overtime; Even the castle from Castlevania is a Creature of Chaos[24], where they are always rebirth from Chaos with each rebirth, the creatures takes a new form[25], with this state being referred to as a "regeneration cycle"[26]), Invisibility (Creatures of Chaos possess a natural aura of darkness, which makes one unable to see those with an aura of darkness by the naked eye[27]), Time Manipulation (1-T, Passive; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[28]), Darkness Manipulation & Subjective Reality (Creatures of chaos very existence causes dark powers to flow beyond the control of the Elgos' grimoires, due to them collecting documented information on Dracula and his castle. Causing their power to materialize in the real world in the form of monsters[29]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[30], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[31]), Text Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Passive; Creatures of the night's dark powers allowed them to rewrite the Grimoires to strengthen their dark powers greatly[32]. It is noted by Lucy that the "vital soul" of a monster is the cause of the grimoire chaos[33]. Their vital souls are causing the grimoires contents to be overwritten changing history to things such as Jonathan Morris is now at a disadvantage in battle[34], or Charlotte fading from existence due to them messing with the history of the Grimoires[35], Maria starting to fade because Richter's history is being rewritten[36], where if the contents of the book change the creatures magic will keep growing and eventually overflow into reality, causing the grimoire to fall into chaos and even more monsters materializing into the real world[37]. The text alterations also make the monsters stronger[38]. With the real world and world of grimoires being considered the same or "equal"[39], compared to the like of Brauner's painting worlds that are quantum multi-layered spaces requiring understandings of theories such as "Curse Amplification"[40]), Law Manipulation (Creatures of Chaos can alter grimoires, which do not adhere to the laws of reality[41]), Power Modification (Creatures of the night alterations of the Grimoire can greatly limit the powers of those far stronger than them, such as Jonathan Morris' power being limited due to the alterations[42]. The Chaos of the Grimoire destabilized the magic of the others[43]).

Resistance to Ice Manipulation & Absolute Zero (All enemies in Castlevania III: Dracula's curse can eventually break out of being frozen from Sypha's ice magic[44]. Along with this to protect against ice attacks in series, one normally wears rings that help them resist against absolute zero[45]), Time Manipulation (1-T; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[46], with their souls being completely free from time[47]. With time in Castlevania being so potent that not even eternity can withstand time[48], along with even artificial life being subject to the laws of time[49]. Some creatures of chaos are immune to time stop, normally being boss-level creatures[50]), Fate Manipulation (Temporal Fate; All immortal beings disrupt the flow of time according to Aeon[51], with their souls being completely free from time[52], with fate being a truth wound by time[53])

Trivia

  • The Trevor Belmont Doppelganger in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse will throw a red version of the Banshee Boomerang. However, in the Japanese version of the game, it throws the regular Banshee Boomerang that Trevor uses.
  • Besides the two Doppelganger boss fights that take place in Symphony of the Night, the player also faces yet another boss battle midway through the Reverse Colosseum where they must fight fake versions of Trevor, Sypha and Grant. However, unlike the Doppelganger, who is a creature that can take the form of other living beings, these actually are a trio of zombies impersonating those characters.
  • In Symphony of the Night, if Doppelganger40 is defeated before Doppelganger10 (commonly done in Richter Mode or Maria Mode, or via sequence breaking), the latter will not appear[1403]. This implies both are the same Doppelganger, Doppelganger40 being a leveled-up version of himself, similar to how Alucard himself can level up (as hinted by the "LV" in the Doppelganger's Japanese name).
    • However, if this is done, the Doppelganger10's Life Max up will be unobtainable.
  • The rotating circular gate in the Outer Wall from where Doppelganger10 comes out in Symphony of the Night is a replica of the Aztec sun stone, mainly differing on their central parts, where the original slab has the face of an Aztec solar deity.
  • Doppelganger10's boss fight only triggers when entering the room from the left side. Entering the room from the right (via sequence breaking) will not load the boss.
  • Shadow, a boss which appears in Harmony of Dissonance, is basically another type of doppelganger. However, instead of copying and adopting the form of the protagonist, it takes the form of a Black Panther, a Moth and an Evil Sword. It also shares the trait that its transform ability goes out of control upon defeat.

KI: You should ask, why do they eat it! I've thought about this stuff.
I've actually thought about the candles. The candles are people's souls that were taken by Death or by the vampires. In Japan there are candles that represent life. So, when you release the souls from the candles by whipping them, they give you a "thank you" present. Thank-you hearts, or thank-you holy water.
The meat, I have no idea.

  179. Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku Novel “I had said it before. I do not intend to bind the world with chaos.”
“…… If so, why did you take power away from the crack in the eclipse’s seal? If you just intend to imitate like a monkey, isn’t your own power enough?”
Those were the emotionless words of Death.
In response, Olrox laughed his bold answer.
“As I’ve said, I would equally gain control over the human world and the source of Dracula’s power, chaos. I do not intend to obey someone else’s mind aside from my own. That includes you who were born out of chaos.”
    “……”
“You should be glad though to know yourself. Just by stealing power, my shameful monotonous time is over…… Even before Alucard appeared, just because I showed up and declared war on him.”
Olrox’s voice was mixed with a tinge of thin delight. He respectfully bowed to Death who completely killed his emotions.
“I would end the reincarnation cycle of this demon castle. I who understood and was spun out of the stains of chaos, swear to rob that power with my hands. Now, yield.”
With Death’s reply, an explosive murderous intent rose.
Two bronze colored scythes much larger than usual appeared; it advanced to the space in between the two men with an intention to cut off Olrox’s head.
    Kill the distance-----
    Kill the sound-----
    Just, faster, soon, die.
It can be seen that the blades have certainly caught Olrox’s neck, but----- that is only an after image and the vampire is already at Death’s back.
    “……die.”
That was said by the enemy who called on his servants.
From the surrounding space, a group of purple bats rose, passed by Olrox’s arm with the speed of a bullet, attacking Death. However, Death did not show any gesture of avoiding them. He simply faced Olrox and sprayed out numerous scythes.
The bats and scythes cancelled each other out and the entire dance hall sparkled with blood."

Akumajo Dracula: Kabuchi no Tsuisoukyoku "Ever since the Middle Ages, every 100 years, this legendary castle would rise together with its master Count Dracula ----- And whenever it happens, it is said that a clan of vampire hunters will seal it. Several hundred years have passed with battles with the [dark lord] Dracula.
When suddenly, an end to it all has been foretold. 1999----- Thanks to the power of a clan in Japan, Dracula’s castle was sealed inside a [solar eclipse] to disappear forever.
However, in this world, there is no such thing as forever. [They] had understood that Dracula’s regeneration cycle ought to have ended. Indeed, people have prepared for this but will it still exist? The castle is the symbol of the chaos within humans and as long as people exist, it will not be completely sealed.

The youth had more than 28 holes penetrating his limbs and body. His heart is already starting to fail and he is desperately trying to say something amidst the darkness.
    “Only…… protect…… you……-----“
When he said those words he must say, the man’s soul already left his body-----becoming one of the floating spirits that wander the halls of the castle.
    However-----
    Fate did not allow it.
For those people who are involved with the demon castle, even the loneliness of death seemed half hearted-----
The man’s soul is pierced by a small scythe that flew in from somewhere. That scythe did not exist physically. It was a diabolic blade created by some magic and possessed a strong soul."

Then, those numerous blades made from magic overlapped with each other and with a powerful atrocious magic constructed a Death scythe in Death’s arm.

That really is no doubt an obsession.

It was a whip that was soaked in blood in some places.
“I picked this up at the garden and I believe this is yours, right? Old man Julius also uses a whip. I came here just to deliver this to ya.”
Whoosh, receiving the thrown whip, Michelle noticed that it was the magical whip that serves as Curtis’ weapon.
“That’s great……! Curtis! With this your power-----“
In order to shake away the confusion she had a while ago, Michelle raised her voice, but-----
“Sorry, but…… with my current self, I could not handle it.”
“……? What are you talking about? Curtis……”
was he still confused, Michelle made him grip his whip.
Snap, some kind of popping sound rang and Michelle felt a light shock in her arm.
    “Uh……!?”
What happened, she directed her eyes on the origin of the shock-----
A part of the whip’s handle had a rotten like disintegration-----
A part of Curtis’ hand was burned, and that skin immediately returned back to as before.
    ----- No way……
    “Curtis……?”
